Org. Setting and Reporting The internship is located at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna, Austria. The intern will work under the direct supervision of Associate Programme Officer working on external relations and business development for the Office of the Director (OD) section.
Internship position is for a period of minimum three months, with the option to extend to a total period of six months, based on the needs of the office and the availability of the intern. The internship period is expected to begin in the second half of September 2020.
This internship is unpaid. The intern will work five days per week (40 hours).
The internship will include tasks under the overall plan of work of UNOOSA, which is responsible for promoting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.
UNOOSA, as the UN’s dedicate entity working on space affairs. UNOOSA strengthens international cooperation in the conduct of space activities for peaceful purposes and the use of space science and technology and their applications towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Further, UNOOSA plays a leading role in facilitating cooperation in matters relating to the peaceful exploration and use of outer space for the benefit of humanity, taking into account the interests and needs of developing countries, with and between governmental entities, including space agencies, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. Amongst other duties the Office of the Director leads the external relations activities of UNOOSA, including the coordination of its partnerships and advocacy matters.

Given the current situation due to COVID-19, selected interns may have to start working remotely from their country of nationality/residence subject to travel restrictions in effect both in their home country and Austria as well as availability of affordable air or surface transportation as applicable.
Responsibilities The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in the external relations and partnership building workstreams of UNOOSA, including preparations for planned external engagement events and other related activities;
- Assist in the partnership engagement activities in support of policy research on space sustainability issues;
- Assist in the preparation and drafting of relevant research reports and related internal briefing notes on space sustainability issues;
- Deliver a final presentation on the internship outcomes; and
Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
- Be computer literate in standard software applications;
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
