Org. Setting and Reporting The internship is located in the Programme Management and Development Unit (PDMU), Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB), Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria). The intern will work in the Afghan Opiate Trade Project (AOTP) under the direct supervision of the AOTP Programme Manager in the department or office to which he/she is assigned.

This internship position is for an initial period of 3 months, with the possibility of extension for additional 3 months. This internship is unpaid and will be home-based. The intern will work five days per week (40 hours).

The opiates produced in Afghanistan continue to pose a threat to public health, governance and security in South-West Asia and beyond at global level. Trafficked to almost every continent worldwide, in 2021 the opiate economy in Afghanistan was valued at between $1.8 and US$2.7 billion, exceeding the value of the country’s officially recorded licit exports of goods and services. The project has produced a number of regional and global threat assessment reports and collaborates extensively with numerous national and regional policy making bodies and law enforcement agencies to provide the international community with a better understanding of the threat posed by the opiates produced in Afghanistan. Understanding the threat from opiates produced in Afghanistan has become more urgent following the changes that have occurred in the country after August 2021. AOTP within PDMU uses these insights to assist the international community and Member States in improving, re-designing, and better targeting alternative projects and programs worldwide.

To gain substantive knowledge in collecting and analyzing drug related data in order to produce research reports relating to the trafficking of opiates produced in Afghanistan. In general, the intern will gain experience in the analysis of opiate trafficking and associated issues, the use of quantitative and qualitative data at the international level, and the functioning of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for apart or the entirety of the internship.

Responsibilities The intern will provide support to the daily work of the AOTP team by: - Collecting and cleaning data related to opiate trafficking to include seizure data, arrest data, trafficking route data; - Presenting this data in graphs, tables and maps; - Assisting in the production of AOTP research reports, presentations and meeting notes; - Carrying out other tasks related to the implementation of AOTP research activities, as requested; - Assisting with database development

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a)be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION) ;•Be computer literate in standard software applications;•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

For this particular position studies in the fields of social sciences, criminology, international relations or related field are required as well as good knowledge of qualitative and quantative research methods and analytical skills. Knowledge of programming languages and ability to work with Drupal, CMS (Content Management System), SQL and databases are an advantage;

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages - English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an advantage.
