Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat supports the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the urban dimensions of the Paris Agreement and the SDGs. Its current normative and operational activities are guided by its Strategic Plan 2020-2023, targeting reduced poverty and inequality, balanced urban-regional development, climate action, and support in crisis contexts.

UN-Habitat Bangkok Office (HBO) was established as a branch office to the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific based in Fukuoka (ROAP-Fukuoka), Japan, with a view to strengthen coordination functions with its regional partners and its advocacy function at the regional level. Through the Chief of HBO, the office additionally supports the Chief in their responsibilities as the Representative to Thailand and focal point for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam on behalf of ROAP-Fukuoka.

Today, the UN-Habitat Bangkok Office (HBO) is thriving as a recognized focal point for housing and sustainable urban development with the aim of enhancing coordination and liaison functions amongst UN agencies based in Bangkok, as well as, strengthening partnerships with regional partners. Consistent with the UN Secretary-General’s reform agenda, the Office supports the unifying of efforts between the UN Asia-Pacific Regional Collaborative Platform. The Office also participates in the UN Country Team in Malaysia and is working under the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).

The responsibilities of ROAP-Fukuoka, the Country Offices and HBO, cover many aspects of human settlement development, combining operational activities (responding to government requests to develop and technically support innovative projects and programmes), as well as developing and field-testing normative activities (advocating increased support to the urban sector, as well as documenting and sharing good practices for policy guidance, and campaigning for Sustainable Urbanization). The intern will be under the supervision of the Associate Expert, UN-Habitat, ROAP.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) internship is for six (6) months.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the Supervision of Associate Expert, the intern will: - Assist in the preparation of draft concept papers, background documents, position papers. - Support in the development of research papers, funding proposals and supplementary documents for resource mobilization, coordination of city profiling and joint programming. - Aid the review of progress on human settlement and urban-related indicators in Malaysia. - Search for and identify funding opportunities and calls for expression of interest. - Facilitate communication and information management, establishing partnerships in Malaysia at the country and sub-national level, along with regional partners and internal colleagues. - Contribute to the management of websites, social media and drafting of newsletters. - Assist in the preparation, implementation and follow-up of events in Malaysia and in the region. - Assist in the administration, budgeting and financial management aspects of programme management including but not limited to monitoring, review and reporting. - Aid in the design of context-specific resources and materials relevant for Malaysia, as well as, support in the provision of translation and interpretation as needed. - Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programme of ROAP and in delivering the strategy of UN-Habitat Bangkok Office. - Support regional initiatives and projects with research, planning and coordination, as necessary.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of studies: Urban Development/Planning, Migration and Displacement, GIS, Transport, Traffic Management, Housing, Civil/Water and Waste Engineering, Architecture, Urban Economy/Finance, Land Administration, Population or Development Studies, Environment, Public Policy and Governance, Technology Innovation, or Human Rights.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Having a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and the ability to interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes the willingness to try to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views is required.

Proficiency in software tools such as Microsoft Office and Adobe design software is required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required and fluency in Malay is highly desirable. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
