Org. Setting and Reporting The role of the EOSG is to support the Secretary-General in performing the function as "chief administrative officer" of the Organization, who shall act in that capacity and perform "such other functions as are entrusted" by the Security Council, General Assembly, Economic and Social Council and other United Nations organs. The Charter also empowers the Secretary-General to "bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security." These guidelines both define the powers of the office and grant it considerable scope for action.

Within the EOSG, the Sustainable Development Unit works towards the promotion and implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, among others. Its strategy is aimed at leveraging the unique position, role and convening power of the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General towards maintaining momentum, accelerating implementation, and promoting ambition on Sustainable Development Goals and climate action. The Sustainable Development Unit also supports the strategic engagement of the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General on sustainable development issues, including financing for development, social protection and jobs, environment and climate action, gender equality, global health, data, food security and related issues.

We seek motivated interns to support the work of the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU).

The internship is for a minimum period of two months and maximum period of six months. Interns work full time and remotely for five days per week

Interns report to full-time professional staff in the Sustainable Development Unit.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, interns will be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern. Interns are required to work 35 hours per week.

Responsibilities The following duties are performed by interns::

  • Provide policy analysis in the context of the Decade of Action for the Delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), collaborating across the different areas of work and supporting coordination efforts with relevant divisions of EOSG and with United Nations Agencies.
  • Help monitor, identify and analyze geographic, political and thematic global trends on issues such as the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, macroeconomic trends, the digital and energy transitions, food systems, the environment, public health, gender equality, science and technology, jobs and SDG data.
  • Support the preparation of analytical reports, papers, talking points, background notes, correspondences, key messages, video remarks, interviews, and daily briefs.
  • Assist in coordinating the formulation of workplans, strategies, programmes, and policies.
  • Support the preparation of meetings, events, summits, talks, and visits.
  • Helping prepare presentations and other communication material, as required.
  • Drafting minutes of meetings and ensuring timely follow-up.

There are five thematic tracks for internships with the Sustainable Development Unit (please specify which track you are best suited to in your Cover Letter):

1) Data: Contributing to the implementation of priority use cases under the Secretary-General’s Data Strategy including assisting with data financing fundraising efforts, supporting advocacy efforts to fill SDG data gaps and improving distribution of United Nations data.

2) Health: Supporting the Secretary-General’s efforts to end the pandemic through a comprehensive health response by advocating for a Global COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy, pushing forward work on pandemic preparedness, universal health coverage and mental health advocacy as well as monitoring the follow up to the Food System Summit.

3) Finance and socio-economic recovery from COVID-19: Assisting with analysis and research for the stocktaking of the Secretary-General’s Finance Strategy for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the drafting of the updated strategy post-2021 in line with Our Common Agenda. Supporting workstreams under the Financing for Development in the Era of COVID-19 pandemic and Beyond and preparations for the Biennial Summit of ECOSOC, the G20 and IFIs. Pushing SDG acceleration strategies and efforts to expand social protection and support to decent work. Pursuing the Leave No One Behind agenda and work on building trust and social cohesion as part of the work under Our Common Agenda.

4) Environment: Pushing for the implementation of the Paris Agreement through related process such as the UN Ocean Conference, the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the Local2030 process and the New Urban Agenda, among others.

5) Reforms and Interagency Coordination: Supporting oversight and coordination of recommendations and follow up of intergovernmental decisions related to the Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda’s report as they relate to sustainable development as well as the timely implementation of decisions taken by the Executive Committee related to sustainable development.

Planning and organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies. Identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required. Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary. Uses time efficiently.

Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately. Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication. Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience. Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Education Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

1) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher such as Master's degree or equivalent, Ph.D. or postgraduate degree).

2) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.

The intern must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
