Duties and Responsibilities

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP's role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy-oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region. The internship with the Office of the Executive Secretary is for a period of three to six months depending on the needs of the Division. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Sustainable Development Officer, Office of the Executive Secretary. Responsibilities: Under the general guidance of professional staff of the Office of the Executive Secretary, the intern will undertake information collection, meeting support, reporting and coordination support in one or more of the following areas (candidates are requested to clearly indicate the area(s) of their interest in their application): Knowledge management: • Assist in the organization of substantive materials related to the work of ESCAP in support of the Deputy Executive Secretary’s engagements • Assist in the collection and consolidation of information related to the development and outcomes of global and regional intergovernmental dialogues. • Assist in the preparation of briefing information on the work of UN ESCAP • Provide assistance in the design and development of products in support of ESCAP’s high level engagement • Develop and maintain records of meeting notes, background materials, and action items in related to high level engagements by the Deputy Executive Secretary. Coordination: • Support for the coordination of missions by the Deputy Executive Secretary. • Support to the coordination of inter-divisional or inter-agency meetings under the supervision of the Deputy Executive Secretary and the Office of the Executive Secretary. • Support to the preparation of background documents, monitoring, and note taking to the secretariat of the Regional Collaborative Platform. • Other coordination support as deemed appropriate by the supervisor. Research support: • Provide research support for background/information materials in support of high level engagements by Deputy Executive Secretary and Executive Secretary; • Provide research support to the preparation of speaking engagements by Deputy Executive Secretary • Other research support as deemed appropriate by the supervisor.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
