You have:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent in the past two years.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (MS Office Suite).
  • Demonstrate keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Preferred areas of study: Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, urban design, urban development, international relations, social science or a related field.
  • Experience working on organizing events such as webinars and in-person events is desirable.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting & Reporting UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) was established in 2011 in Cairo, Egypt, and provides technical cooperation and capacity building for 18 countries across the Arab region. The Regional Office promotes and implements policies, programs and operational projects in UN-Habitat’s focus areas, at regional, national, and local levels, aimed at achieving sustainable urban development in the countries of the region, and provide technical cooperation services, upon request from governments. UN-Habitat ROAS covers all the operational activities and projects in 18 countries across the Arab Region; currently, with 12 active country programmes. UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States works towards supporting countries in the Arab region to achieve sustainable urbanization through normative and operational work, technical support and advice on urban policies. The regional office also works with partners and stakeholders to implement the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2020-2025, which emphasizes achieving tangible results in four main domains of change, namely: reducing inequality and poverty, shared prosperity in cities and regions, promoting climate action and urban environments, and preventing crisis and response in urban areas. The vacancy is full time and located in the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States in Cairo, Egypt. The Programme Management Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Knowledge Management and Reporting Officer and overall supervision of the Representative, Regional Office for Arab States. Responsibilities The incumbent will be requested to perform the following duties and responsibilities: i. Assist in programme development through research, analysis and presentation of key issues; ii. Support the timely delivery of programme tasks; iii. Support UN-Habitat’s effective representation and active engagement in regional mechanisms. Specific tasks may include: - Conduct research and literature review on key thematic issues, with a focus on climate change in urban areas; - Support the Programme Officer with the drafting and visualization of presentations and concept notes; - Keep track/follow-up on schedules, deadlines, and action points for various projects; - Coordinate the collection, verification, consolidation, organization and/or submission of data from regional colleagues, partners and stakeholders; - Assist in the timely completion of reporting assignments and actively engaging in data collection, monitoring, and reporting activities; - Keep meeting minutes and action points at UN-Habitat led meetings; - Support the design and maintenance of the filing system; - Provide logistical support on activities such as the organization and reporting of conferences, events, training courses, etc.; - Perform other duties as assigned. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, urban design, urban development, international relations, social science or a related field. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.
