Duties and Responsibilities

UNODC is committed to helping States to prevent crime and build the capacity of their criminal justice systems to operate more effectively within the framework of the rule of law. Crime and violence require a balanced approach, with sufficient investment in evidence-based crime prevention programmes and policies as well as efforts to establish and maintain criminal justice institutions that are effective, can be held accountable and provide justice for all. The United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice offer the guidance needed to make this happen. This internship is located in the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section (CPCJS), Division of Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna, Austria. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. The Intern will work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of the Officer who is leading the Coordination Team with a focus on supporting the implementation of the Global Programme for People-centred Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (GLOJS8). Daily responsibilities may vary and be tailored on the individual's background. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Support the work of the Coordination Team related to Results-Based Management (RBM) and the implementation of GLOJS8; • Support the Coordination Team with research and coordination in various cross-cutting areas and emerging issues related to crime prevention and criminal justice reform (including community-based crime prevention, access to justice, violence against women, violence against children as well as prison reform); • Assist in the drafting, editing and consolidating of the GLOJS8 programme plan, progress and implementation as well as the UNODC Strategy 2021-2025 reports; • Contribute to the drafting and preparation of UNODC publications, briefing notes, background notes, reports, evaluations, and other internal documents, presentations, correspondences with Member State governments, talking points and speeches; • Support the design and layout of infographics, web pages, social media content and presentations on various topics related to the work of the unit, including advocacy materials and webstories. • Assist with the technical / ICT arrangements for webinars or hybrid events. The Intern will further support the work of the Coordination Team by performing other tasks as necessary. This vacancy announcement is for one internship position starting in March 2024 for a period of four to six months. Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements and attach the proof in the Inspira application: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. • Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Teams. Knowledge of Canva, Adobe or other design tools is an asset. Please describe your competency using these software applications. • Applicants must have a keen demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. • Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
