Org. Setting and Reporting These two positions are located in the Digital Enablement Team (DET) leading the implementation of the Digital Transformation of UN Peacekeeping (DTS) within the Office of the Director for Coordination and Shared Services (ODCSS) serving the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and Peace Operations (DPO).

The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) provides political and executive direction to UN peacekeeping operations around the world and maintains contact with the Security Council, troop and financial contributors, and parties to the conflict in the implementation of Security Council mandates. The Department works to integrate the efforts of UN, governmental and nongovernmental entities in the context of peacekeeping operations. DPO also provides guidance and support on military, police, rule of law, mine action and other relevant issues to other UN political and peacebuilding missions.

The DET leads on the implementation of the Digital Transformation Strategy (DTS) which sets out an approach to deliver a future UN Peacekeeping that is innovative, data-driven and technology-enabled. The team oversees, coordinates and facilitates the implementation of the strategy, providing guidance and support to those leading on various workstreams and initiatives. Interns report to full-time professional staff and focus on one of the two tracks set out under Responsibilities.

This internship is UNPAID and is designed to be in person and full-time (35 hours per week). It can be adapted for remote and/or part-time (20 hours per week) upon request. A full-time internship is for an initial period of two months and a part-time internship is for an initial of four months. Internships may be extended up to maximum six months depending on the needs of the Division.

Responsibilities Our interns work as full members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make UN Peacekeeping innovative, data-driven and technology-enabled.

Area 1: Coordination and Programme Management This track resembles consulting-like work and focuses on the Governance and Programme Management aspects of the DTS 1. Support work on designing and implementing a Governance framework for the digital transformation of UN Peacekeeping 2. Support the planning and programme management of the digital transformation of UN Peacekeeping 3. Support the preparation of senior-level meetings, conferences, and engagements 4. Support the tracking and analysis of decisions and their implementation 5. Develop and provide user support for visualizations/deliverables for senior managers

Area 2: Communications and Strategic Support This track will focus on crafting a sustainable narrative for the DTS, and will require good writing, planning, and organizing skills, as well as some experience in developing visuals, slide decks and information packets. 1. Support the preparation of senior-level meetings, conferences, engagements 2. Attend meetings with UN counterparts and committees, draft action points and terms of reference for other stakeholders, as well as overall notetaking 3. Assist in speechwriting, messaging, and preparation of reports 4. Provide design support across a range of print/digital products, including: presentations, factsheets, one-pagers, and other core identity products that illustrate the corporate vision, mission, values, and scope 5. Support the development and management of websites (layout and content)

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met.

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
