Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. Focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. The position is in United Nations Human Settlements Programme, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP)

UN-Habitat supports the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the urban dimensions of the Paris Agreement and the SDGs. Its current normative and operational activities are guided by its Strategic Plan 2020-2025, targeting reduced poverty and inequality, balanced urban-regional development, climate action and support in crisis contexts.

The Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) was established in 1997 in Fukuoka, Japan. The Office serves countries in the Asia and Pacific region. Currently UN-Habitat ROAP implements projects in 16 countries. Countries with UN-Habitat Offices include Afghanistan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. Internships are deployed in the Regional Office and the majority of the offices in countries, subject to demand and security.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) ROAP, Programme Management internship is for 6 (six) months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns will also be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas, insurance and arranging their own travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.

Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above carrying international recruitment status during the period of the internship or for the 6 (six) months immediately following the expiration date of the internship.

The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussions between the intern and the supervisor(s) and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned to.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the needs of the unit where the intern is placed.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager, the intern will: - Assist in the preparation of draft concept papers, background documents, position papers. - Assist in the development of project concept notes/project briefs and project documents for resource mobilization. - Search for funding calls for expression of interest. - Assist with communication and information management, establishing connections between county-level and regional partners and internal colleagues, etc. - Assist with the management of websites and drafting of Web story. - Assist in the preparation, implementation and follow-up of meetings and forums. - Assist in the administration, budgeting and financial management aspects of programme management including but not limited to financial monitoring, review and reporting, project start-up and closure, human resources, procurement and assets, workshops, and liaison with regional office. - Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programmes of the China Office.

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). c. Have graduated with bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of study: Studies in Urban Development, Urban Planning, Urban Geography, Population/Urban Statistics, Urban Environment, Urban Landscaping and Food Security, Ecology, Climate Change, Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, Architecture, Urban Economics, Urban Finance, Land Administration, Development Studies, Communications, Journalism or other related fields of study.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Experience in urban planning, solid waste management or in any urban related issues is required.

Knowledge in using IT tools like InDesign and Photoshop is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in written and oral English and Chinese is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
