Org. Setting and Reporting The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN). It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946. The seat of the Court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands). Of the six principal organs of the United Nations, it is the only one not located in New York (United States of America). The Court's role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies. The Court is composed of 15 judges, who are elected for terms of office of nine years by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council. It is assisted by a Registry, its administrative organ. Its official languages are English and French.

This Internship is located in the Registry's Administrative and Personnel Division, which is responsible for administration functions, including human resources management, procurement, property management, and building-related matters.

Responsibilities- Provide procurement and administrative support to the Procurement Unit in the acquisition of wide variety of goods and services. - Assist in producing tender documents (e.g. Invitations to Bids, Requests for Proposals and Requests for Quotation) based on the nature of requirements and cost of procurement involved. - Assist in preparing abstracts of offers and compiling data contained in quotations, proposals and bids to determine which supplier can deliver the required goods/services at the best terms and lowest costs possible under the guidance of the Procurement Unit staff. - Assist in monitoring status of existing requisitions; maintains contact with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of goods and services; coordinates shipment of goods/commodities/equipment; verifies receipt and inspection of deliverables and accurately reports, as and if required. - Assist in collecting documents required for the production of purchase orders and contracts for approval by the Procurement Official, and file and distribute as required. - Maintain relevant internal databases and files; keeps track of any contractual agreements, systems contracts, etc. and informs affected users of contractual rights and obligations. - Research, retrieve, and present information from a variety of internal and external sources on sources of supply, vendors by commodity, etc., as well as obtain specifications for new products and equipment on the market. - Drafts routine correspondence. - Assist with operational asset management: asset receiving and inspection, asset tagging and bar-coding asset, physical verification and asset disposal procedures. - Perform other duties as assigned.

Education Please note that to qualify for an internship with the International Court of Justice, the applicants must meet one of the following requirements: - Be enrolled in an undergraduate programme (bachelor's level or equivalent), in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent) or in a PhD programme, or - Have graduated within the past two years.

Educational background in business administration is not required, but shall be considered an added asset

Languages An excellent command of at least one of the Court's official and working languages (English and French) is required. Knowledge of the other language shall be considered an added asset.

Special Notice The minimum duration of an internship shall be two months. This period can be extended up to a total period of six months.

The normal hours of work shall be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday, with a luncheon interval of one hour and a half. However, when necessary, flexible working hours' arrangements can be established in accordance with the relevant Office Circular.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the Court. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions, though the Registry shall assist with arrangements for the visa application, where necessary.

The United Nations or the Court accept no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during an internship.

However, interns may enroll in the Court's Health Insurance scheme provided they pay the applicable premium. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance (including coverage for costs of hospitalization) and third-party liability insurance in the host State for at least the duration of the internship and until their departure. They shall also provide a medical certificate of good health prior to the commencement of the internship.

Applicants who are children or siblings of Registry officials shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the Court. Applicants who are otherwise related to Registry officials may be engaged as interns, provided that they are neither assigned to the same work unit as such officials nor placed under the direct or indirect supervision of such officials.
