Org. Setting and Reporting United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1965 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental, and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’s goals are to:

- advance understanding of crime-related problems; - foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; - support the respect of international instruments and other standards; - facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This position is located within the UNICRI Counter Terrorism Programme and it will contribute in particular to the Institute’s work in the field of preventing violent extremism (PVE). As a member of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact, UNICRI contributes to the implementation of coordinated and coherent efforts across the United Nations system to prevent and counter terrorism. The internship is for an initial period of two months, with a possibility for extension of up to a total period of six months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Programme Officer, Counter-Terrorism Programme.

The preferred starting date is mid-October 2022.

Due to the current international COVID19 emergency and related containment measures, the initial months of this internship will be done in TELECOMMUTING, i.e. remotely from home. Therefore, the candidate must be able to telework and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment (including a computer and internet connection) to perform assignments in teleworking. Should the COVID19-related restrictions and measures be removed, and should the decision to further extend the internship period be taken, the internship can be continued from UNICRI's Office in Turin.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, Counter-Terrorism Programme, the intern will assist the project team by performing tasks including, but not limited to:

- Conducting research on the various topics related to prevention of violent extremism, including gender responsive approaches to PVE, civil society engagement, and climate insecurity and PVE, with a particular focus on the Sahel region; - Contributing to the drafting of papers, reports and other written outputs, including speeches and power point presentations, both in English and French; - Supporting in the organization of trainings, expert group meetings and webinars, including drafting concept notes and background documents, taking notes and drafting reports; - Draft relevant correspondence, both in English and French; - Perform other job-related duties upon request.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in the field of law, criminal justice, crime prevention and control, or other related fields; or

(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) in the field of law, criminal justice, crime prevention and control, other related fields.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Previous experience in conducting research in the field of preventing violent extremism is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English and French is required.
