Org. Setting and Reporting The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) /Population Division/Population Estimates and Projections Section internship is for two months with a possibility of extension to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the Division.

The unpaid internship is designed to be in person and full-time at the New York duty station. Depending on the situation of the successful candidates, the internship may also offer a Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA) to be conducted fully remote, hybrid (in-person and remote), part-time, and/or temporary FWA for the purpose of G-4 visa processing.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Department or Office to which they are assigned.

The Migration and Urbanization Section (MUS) monitors progress in meeting internationally agreed goals and objectives on migration and urbanization, analyses emerging trends in migration and urbanization and assesses their demographic and development impacts. The Section also reviews and assesses the impact of government policies related to migration and urbanization, and participates in inter-agency coordination activities on these topics. The Section organizes expert group meetings in its areas of expertise and assists in the substantive servicing of intergovernmental meetings.

Interns' learning opportunities:

Interns will have opportunities to: broaden their experience and knowledge about international population issues; gain exposure to the work of the Population Division and related work in other UN agencies; broaden their understanding of current demographic issues globally; and be introduced to the functioning of United Nations bodies. Interns are integrated in the MUS team, they participate and contribute to staff meetings and discussions, research issues, draft papers and reports, develop and maintain information databases, and provide support to other MUS activities. Interns work under the supervision of MUS staff. In addition, interns have an opportunity to attend lectures and other events in New York related to social and economic development as well as other UN-related issues.

Responsibilities Under the general guidance of Population Affairs Officers in the Migration and Urbanization Section, Population Division, the intern will be responsible to provide support on the following:

Assist in developing statistical methodology and computer scripts (preferably in R language) for estimation and short-term projections (or “nowcasting”) of trends in migrant stocks by country or area of origin;

Contribute to collection of empirical data on migrant stocks.

The specific research topics will be defined based on discussion between the intern and the responsible officer and should be mutually beneficial for both the intern and UN.

Upon completion of this internship, the intern will prepare a brief report and make a presentation to the Division on the experience gained, including discussion of potential research papers that could follow.

The intern may also be asked to assist in the day-to-day work of the Division as needed.¿ The intern is expected to familiarize him/herself, to a limited extent, with administrative work of the division and other tasks that are typical of UN organizations.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.

For this internship, applicants should be pursuing their studies preferably in demography, population studies, human geography, applied statistics, and be computer literate in standard software applications. Proficiency with statistical software programming (e.g., R or Stata) is required, working experience with MS Excel is required, and familiarity with SQL server is desirable. Familiarity with population and vital statistics data and with demographic estimation methods are assets, but not prerequisite.

  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

  • Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official United Nations language is desirable (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat).

REMOTE INTERNSHIPS (COVID-19): In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. G-4 VISAS FOR INTERNS: All interns assigned to a UN Organization, including Funds and Programmes, at a United States based duty station, who are not United States citizens or United States legal permanent residents (LPR) will be required to obtain G-4 visas prior to travelling to the United States.

Prospective interns who are already in the United States in another nonimmigrant status may need to apply for a change of status to G-4 prior to joining the United Nations for an internship. It should be emphasized that prospective interns are responsible for ensuring that they have an appropriate valid visa and employment authorization allowing them to undertake the internship.

If the applicant is in F-1 status and has a valid EAD, they may undertake an internship within the scope of their F-1 visa without seeking a change of visa status. Please note, however, that interns in F-1 status who wish to undertake an internship following completion of their academic programme as part of Optional Practical Training (OPT) ‘may’ need to seek a change of visa status to G-4 (This process currently takes about 8-10 weeks) or obtain G-4 visa overseas.

To qualify for G-4 nonimmigrant status, interns must be serving essentially full-time, i.e. 35 + hours per week.

United Nations Considerations According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
