Org. Setting and Reporting Security-sector reform (SSR) promotes the importance of transparency, integrity and accountability in armed forces, police, border guards, customs and other security-sector institutions, in particular in fragile countries. The Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI), which hosts the Security-Sector Reform (SSR) Unit, is part of the UN' s Department of Peace Operations. We bring together multi-disciplinary specialists to provide a UN headquarters focal point and technical SSR resource for the UN system, as well as national and international partners. Specifically, the SSR Unit provides field support and UN system-wide capacity-building in this important area.

The Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) includes the Department's activities in the areas of police, justice and corrections, mine action and weapons/ammunition management, the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of ex-combatants and security sector reform (https://peacekeeping.un.org/en/department-of-peacekeeping- operations).

The internship is for a minimum of six (6) months. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member of the unit. The internship will be home-based but may include a period in the SSR Unit HQ in New York.

Responsibilities Within the delegated authority, the interns will be responsible for the following duties:

 Support country- and/or regional-level backstopping activities;  Assist in the development of knowledge and guidance tools, including the collection, development and management of good practices and lessons learned;  Support strategic engagement efforts with external parties  Gather, research, analyse and present information from various sources;  Assist in the drafting of various official documents (e.g. minutes, briefing notes, draft notes…etc);  Assist in data and information management;  Support the organization of meetings;  Perform other duties as required.

Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent)

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required, fluency in French and Arabic is desirable.
