Org. Setting and Reporting In January 2020, the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs launched the Innovation Cell, an interdisciplinary team dedicated to helping the Department and its field presences to understand and explore, pilot, and scale new technologies, approaches, and practices in conflict prevention, mediation and peacebuilding. Examples include predictive data analytics, strategic foresight, remote sensing and innovation methodologies. Responding to the Secretary-General’s call on the UN system to accelerate its uptake of innovative methods, the Innovation Cell catalyses innovation in peace and security, while providing a forum for colleagues at UNHQ and in the field to engage collaboratively in human-centred design and problem-solving.

The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) internship is for a period of three months with the opportunity to extend up to six months, depending on the needs and requirements of the Department. The positions will be located in the Innovation Cell of the DPPA’s Policy and Mediation Division.

The Innovation Cell intends to recruit two interns. Depending on the pandemic, the internship can be in-person or remote. The internships do not carry any payment or retribution expectation. Interns work remotely five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the nature of specific projects, and the internship duration. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research in innovation areas of interest to the Division, such as innovation for conflict analysis, peacemaking and peacebuilding - Assistance in project-specific outputs, such as communication outreach, videos and audio.
  • Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings
  • Assistance with logistics during conferences, meetings, and interactive presentations
  • Preparation of briefing materials, analytical documents, and talking points for managers and senior officials
  • Support all stages of projects, from brainstorming and project planning to project evaluation and post-project communication efforts
  • Support the recruitment of and coordination with consultants and external partners

    Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

1. Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degreeor equivalent, or higher); or,(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent)

2. The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for.

3. Proficient in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment, scanner, printer, etc.).

4. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.

5. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat).

Special Notice The internship is UNPAID; full-time internship (35 hours per week) or part-time internship (20 working per week). The internship can be undertaken remotely outside the duty station or in a hybrid working arrangement from the UN Premise at the New York City, USA, duty station. The intern will work under the supervision of a staff member of the Section.

In this context, all internationally recruited staff members shall be required to move periodically to discharge new functions within or across duty stations under conditions established by the Secretary-General.
