Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Peace and Security, Humanitarian, and Resilience Section leads the UN system-wide coordination on women, peace and security and gender-responsive humanitarian action and disaster risk reduction; provides technical and financial support to the UN Women field offices; and implements several global initiatives, which range from investigating and documenting sexual and gender based-crimes, to facilitating women’s participation in peace talks and peacekeeping missions, channeling funds to women’s organizations in crises and post-conflict contexts to respond to humanitarian crises and prevent disasters, or supporting our government counterparts in these areas.

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Policy Specialist, the intern will provide support to the Section’s work.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for the following:

  • Support the team with the compilation of background research for the Secretary-General's annual report to the Security Council, including by preparing short analytical summaries of new publications for the drafting team.
  • Provide technical support to communications and media-related work to promote the team's work on mediation.
  • Flag relevant new research and publications, especially new facts and figures on women, peace and security.
  • Support compilation of background documents and desk review for the research on financing and programming on gender in climate and security
  • Other tasks as required by the Peace and Security Section.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: law, gender studies, development studies, international relations, human rights or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Meet one of the following:
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; or
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
