Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. In 2022, the UN Environment Assembly mandated UNEP to develop a new subprogramme on Digital Transformation. The vision of the Digital Transformation subprogramme is to harness technological advancements to enhance UNEP's capability to respond to the needs of member states in an agile manner as they undertake action to tackle the triple planetary crises of climate change, nature loss and pollution. It realizes a problem-based, user-centric approach to enable the design and development of digital products and services by pursuing three strategic intervention actions as outlined in the MTS 2022-2025. The purpose of this internship is to support the digital community of practice and communication work, especially the World Environment Situation Room and the Global Environmental Data Strategy. Responsibilities include providing secretariat functions, developing digital transformation indicators, assisting in coordination efforts, and contributing to internal and external communication strategies on digital transformation initiatives. Additionally, the role will encompass assisting in the design and delivery of training programs, organizing digital innovation events, and offering ad hoc data visualisation expertise to projects and programs as needed. The internship is for a minimum of three (3) months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of six (6) months. This internship offer is in UNEP/ Office of the Chief Digital Officer, in Nairobi (Kenya). Under the supervision of the Associate Data Scientist and the Associate Expert in Digital Transformation, it is expected that his/her responsibilities will fall within one or several of the following broad activities: • Assist in the communications and knowledge management plan for the Office of the Chief Digital Officer, focusing specifically on development of monthly newsletters, website content management, and knowledge management. • Assist in the design and delivery of a digital transformation capacity building programme and in the organization of monthly peer to peer Digital Discovery sessions. • Compose visual assets, including factsheets, presentations, data visualizations, and infographics, for internal and external use as needed • Undertake desktop research and support the development of concept notes. • Create, design, and produce creative multimedia content - videos, infographics, visuals and other supplementary communication assets – case studies, presentations and flyers. • Collaborate with key stakeholders including partners, project managers, and third-party suppliers in the development of multimedia assets. • Help with the value additions to our internal and external websites. • Other duties to support the work of the Office as requested and in accordance with the Intern's interests.

Qualifications/special skills

• Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Enrolment in a graduation programme focused on multimedia design, graphic design, communications, (environmental) economics, finance, business administration or natural resource management OR • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) OR • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation N/A

Languages

For this assignment, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.
