Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MLF) supports projects to reverse the deterioration of the Earth's stratospheric ozone layer and reducing consumption of high global warming hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). It was established in 1991 as the financial mechanism of the Montreal Protocol to assist developing countries (Article 5 countries in the language of the Protocol) in complying with their obligations under the Montreal Protocol. The MLF is managed by the Executive Committee, which is assisted by the Fund Secretariat, located in Montreal, Canada and administered by UNEP (www.multilateralfund.org). This internship is located in UNEP/MLF at the Montreal duty station. The Multilateral Fund’s evaluation unit is seeking graduate students who wish to gain professional experience in an international organization to supplement their studies. The internship provides practical educational experience working in a multicultural and intergovernmental organization. Under the supervision of the Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer (SMEO), the intern is assigned projects and tasks that are relevant to their educational background and interests and provide them with the opportunity to apply and further develop their theoretical knowledge. The MLF Evaluation Unit is offering an internship with a start date of 1 March to 31st August 2024 for a minimum duration of 4 months and maximum duration up to 6 months. Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the SMEO and in close collaboration with the PMA the intern will provide assistance to the Monitoring & Evaluation activities, contributing to the implementation of the Monitoring & Evaluation work programme as contained in UNEP/OzL.Pro/ExCom/93/13/Rev.1 (available at http://www.multilateralfund.org/93/pages/English.aspx) with the following responsibilities and duties: Depending on the competencies and interests of the intern, the assignments may include: • Supporting the Evaluation team by preparing background research relevant to ongoing evaluation assignments; • Assisting in doing the background research to prepare the Terms of Reference for the thematic evaluations included in the Monitoring & Evaluation work programme for 2024-2025; • Assisting the Evaluation team in collecting, organizing, and analysing qualitative and quantitative data; • Assisting in obtaining and organizing documents and internal data from the MLF Secretariat and implementing agencies for the purpose of evaluation; • Assist in conducting qualitative, statistical, and quantitative analyses of the data collected; • Assist in developing online surveys and collecting responses; • Assist in organizing financial data and analysing trends; • Assist in various tasks based on evolving needs.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; d. Preferred area of study: economics, environment and social sciences, political sciences or related fields. The applicant should have: a. Analytical skills, good communication skills both written and oral; b. Proficiency in computer skills, population of websites, use of databases, web-based platforms and relevant software; c. Keen interest in monitoring and evaluation d. Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; e. The ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
