Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This position is located in the UNRCO, Brazzaville, Congo.

The Resident Coordinator (RC) system encompasses all organizations of the United Nations system dealing with operational activities for development, regardless of their formal presence in the country. In Congo, one of the main concerns of the UN is to strengthen human capital, including access to basic and social services, such as information and integrated sexual health services for adolescents and young people living with disabilities and special needs. This includes access to education for children and students in institutes for the deaf and blind, indigenous women, in short, marginalised and vulnerable people. This focus on people living with HIV (PLHIV) is articulated in the Congo's strategic planning framework - UNDAF/Cooperation Framework 2020-2024, which is aligned with the inclusion of PLHIV in the Government of Congo's National Development Plan.

Under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator, the Resident Coordination Office is dedicated to coordinating the efforts of the UN country team in the implementation of the Cooperation Framework. The RCO team supports the Resident Coordinator through the following key coordination functions: - Analysis and strategic planning to accelerate progress towards the SDGs in Congo and ensure the implementation of the UNDAF/UNSDCF. - Oversight of the strategic planning and programming cycle of UN development assistance at country level UNDAF/UNSDCF. - Representation and support of the UN Secretariat and resident and non-resident UN agencies. - Support to national coordination systems, and the process of coordinating the wider development community's efforts to support the SDGs in Congo. - Facilitation of sustainable integrated financing strategies and partnership for the SDGs. - Development and management of common operational support services. - Coordination of humanitarian responses and support to peace and conflict prevention. - Communication and awareness-raising on international norms and standards, support to governments' efforts and objectives to integrate human rights into national development policies and contribute to equality and end discrimination.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator Office (UNRCO), LNOB/Diversity and Inclusion Internship is for three (3) months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the authority of the Head of the Resident Coordinator's Office, the Diversity and Inclusion Intern will be responsible, under coordination, for carrying out the following tasks: - Support the management and development of relationships between the UNRCO and its partners to ensure that inclusion and diversity aspects are taken into account (Donors, NGOs, Press and UNS). - Work closely with the Human Right Advisor to plan and monitor all activities related to human right and LNOB. - Support the UN inter-agencies working group PSEA/LNOB/Gender. - Contribute technically to the development of programmes and activities in the field of human rights, diversity and inclusion within the framework of the UNDAF/UNSDCF. - Contribute to the analysis of the situation of vulnerable groups (including women, children, indigenous people, people living with disabilities, etc.) and how to integrate them into the programmes/projects that flow from the UNDAF/UNSDCF. - Develop advocacy, information and communication tools on diversity and inclusion. - Support human rights promotion activities, disseminate human rights materials to governmental and non-governmental partners. - Assist national authorities in their efforts to implement and follow up on the recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). - Contribute to the mainstreaming of gender, the principle of "leaving no one behind" and specific women's/girls' rights issues in all UN activities. - Contribute to the integration of human rights in UN strategic documents, national development plans and in the work of the UN Country Team and working groups, especially in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals. - Carry out any other related tasks that may be assigned by the Head of Office and the Human Rights Adviser.

Expected results: - Articles on topics within the scope of UNDAF/UNSDCF and its interventions in Congo are available in collaboration with the different programmes. - UNRCO activities related to the UNDAF/UNSDCF in the field prepared with a focus on diversity and inclusion of vulnerable people. - Activities related to human rights, diversity and inclusion are organised. - Support to the government, the National Human Rights Commission and civil society organisations on human rights, diversity and inclusion is strengthened.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies: Law, International Relations, Political Science or any other related field of studies.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Knowledge of the necessary tools to work on human rights issues is required.

Good theoretical or practical knowledge of human rights, the UN system and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its guiding principles is desirable.

Good knowledge of information gathering techniques from multiple sources is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
