Org. Setting and Reporting UNICRI is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI' s goals are:

−to advance understanding of crime-related problems; −to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; −to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; −to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This position is opened within the UNICRI's New York Liaison Office. The internship is for an initial period of two (2) months, with an opportunity of extension up to a total period of six (6) months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the programme, project or unit to which they are assigned.

Due to the current international COVID19 emergency and related containment measures and international travel restrictions, the first two months of this internship will be done in TELECOMMUTING, i.e. remotely from home. Therefore, candidates must be able to telework and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment to perform assignments in teleworking. The candidates must be available to work within the EST time zone to participate in online meetings and other online activities. Should the COVID19-related restrictions and measures be removed, internship may be continued from UNICRI's premises.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of UNICRI’s New York Liaison Officer, the intern will assist in managing the implementation of the programme of work of the UNICRI's New York Liaison Office. Examples of duties to be performed may include the following: −Assist in drafting and preparing official documents. −Attend and summarize conferences and meetings. −Support organization of meetings and conferences. −Assist in data collection. −Conduct research and provide analysis on relevant issues. −Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations etc. −Monitor regional and global news sources for articles and stories relevant to the project, programme or unit activities. −Support implementation of projects. −Assist in maintaining databases.

The intern must be available to work within the EST time zone to participate in online meetings and other online activities.

Education- Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

- Have studied in a field relevant to international law, the laws of international organizations, diplomacy, international affairs or international politics. - Be computer literate in standard software applications. - Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Is your field of study closely related to the type of internship you are applying for (i.e.international law, the laws of international organizations, diplomacy, international affairs or international politics)?

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or papers based on such information except with the explicit written authorization of the Chief of Centralized Management Unit. Interns are bound by the same duties and obligations as staff members, and the information to which an intern has access in the course of the internship must not be divulged to external parties.

On completion of their internship, interns are required to complete a substantive report on their assignments. This will be included in their file and will be forwarded, upon request, to the sponsoring institution, government body or private organization.

UNICRI interns are responsible for all internship-related expenses that they incur. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service.

Candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa authorizing their stay in UNICRI duty stations before they depart to begin their internship. While this is the overall responsibility of the selected candidate, UNICRI will provide supporting documents in this regard.
