You have:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or in the final academic year of a university degree programme.
  • Preferably in the areas of International Affairs, Information Policy or Law, Information and Data Strategy, Social Sciences, etc.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Office 365 tools or their consumer equivalent.
  • Knowledge of using business intelligence tools for gathering, consolidating, and analyzing data.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft cloud technologies (Office 365, SharePoint Online, Azure).
  • Experience with relational databases such as SQL Server or other databases.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) is leading the digital transformation of the Organization to enable a better, safer, more sustainable future through secure, reliable, and innovative technology solutions. This internship is for two months with an opportunity to extend for up to six months depending on the needs of the Office. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. This internship is within the Business Relationship Management Section of OICT. BRMS offers internship opportunities in three areas, with generic duties to: • Assist the Information and Communication Technology teams on various IT projects and services • Provide administrative and substantive support to meetings and conferences, preparation of background documents and presentations, meeting minutes, handling logistics; etc. • Prepare documentation - mainly training materials, operational reports, manuals, and user-specifications • Support data analytics or data policy • Work with Microsoft Outlook and other desk-top applications, specifically Microsoft SharePoint Hub • Work with MS Power BI, Tableau, MS Dynamics or other similar self-service analytics toolsets • Assist in other IT functions as necessary Interns will be requested to indicate their main preference among three key areas: BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT • Assist Business Relationship Managers in maintaining relationships with OICT partners and understanding their needs, challenges, and priorities • Collaborate with OICT's client entities to understand processes, identify pain-points, and support in the development of ICT plans using potential technology solutions • Log demands and client requests for new ICT capabilities or changes to existing ICT services • Coordinate with client users, vendors, and teams within the UN system on Information Technology services DATA ANALYTICS • Assist in the development corporate visualization solutions derived from multiple data sources using state-of the-art tools to enable insight and decision-making at various levels • Support the development of data models, including performance measures, to enable scorecard analysis • Build interactive dashboards and reports, using corporate analytics applications • Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner • Work with MS Power BI, Tableau, MS Dynamics or other similar self-service analytics toolsets • Work with relational databases such as SQL Server or other databases • Work with analytical techniques such as sentiment analysis, predictive analysis or social media monitoring STRATEGIC AND PROJECT SUPPORT • Help analyze performance across functional areas, including human resources, supply chain, healthcare, uniformed support, planning and operational support, HQ facility and administrative support • Support work on priority projects such as specific innovation initiatives including managing a SharePoint/Teams hub dedicated to the ongoing pilot project for the Operationalization of Telemedicine Capability for UN Peacekeeping Missions • Support design, drafting and implementation of strategic priorities such as departmental-wide performance framework, client relationship models, etc.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, at least one of the following conditions must be met: (1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (2) Be enrolled in the FINAL academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (3) Have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and (2). Preferably in the areas of International Affairs, Information Policy or Law, Information and Data Strategy, Social Sciences, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Systems / Technology, Economics, Machine Learning, Data Visualization and Analytics, Web Analytics, Graphic Design, Web Design, User Interface Design, Human-computer Interaction, Digital Marketing or a relevant degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of above-mentioned degrees. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. The knowledge and skills below are an advantage: • Knowledge and proficiency in Office 365 tools or their consumer equivalent • Knowledge of Microsoft cloud technologies (Office 365, SharePoint Online, Azure) • Knowledge of IT Service Management (ITIL Foundation) and Project Management (Prince 2) frameworks • Knowledge of using business intelligence tools for gathering, consolidating, and analyzing data from databases and reports, manipulating data in Excel (Pivot Tables and queries), Power BI, etc. • Interest in developing sustainable ICT solutions, focusing on modern ICT • Interest and understanding of customer-oriented service delivery, with a focus on innovative enterprise ICT solutions, collaboration and customer experience • Understanding of data management, including real-time/streaming data, data warehousing and data cleansing • Experience in performance management, process, redesign, innovation • Experience with consulting projects No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.

Additional Information

Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For internships in the United States of America, persons who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant (such as F1 or J1 visa) status, will be required to obtain a G4 visa. The selected person will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and approved employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT), allowing them to undertake the internship.
