Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) is leading the digital transformation of the Organization to enable a better, safer, more sustainable future through secure, reliable, and innovative technology solutions. OICT is responsible for defining strategic direction for ICT in the Secretariat. It provides oversight of ICT programmes, systems, applications and decision-making. In field missions, OICT delivers quality, robust and reliable solutions and services that enable peace operations and support the implementation of mandates. The Office provides and maintains the infrastructure and service management frameworks on which these solutions and services are delivered. Our interns work as full members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make a significant difference in the whole department, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. We offer internship opportunities in three broad areas. Interns are sought who have skills matching one or more of the below areas and are sought on a continual basis. DATA ANALYTICS Responsibilities • Assist in the development corporate visualization solutions derived from multiple data sources using state-of the-art tools to enable insight and decision-making at various levels • Support the development of data models, including performance measures, to enable scorecard analysis • Build interactive dashboards and reports, using corporate analytics applications • Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner • Work with MS Power BI, Tableau or other similar self-service analytics toolsets • Work with relational databases such as SQL Server or other databases • Support geo-spatial analysis and geographic information systems such as ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, Leaflet, Carto or Open Street Map • Work with analytical techniques such as sentiment analysis, predictive analysis or social media monitoring DATA STRATEGY Responsibilities • Understand and support OICT on the implementation of the Secretary General's Data Strategy • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to schedule meetings, gather feedback, and keep meeting minutes • Support and update the list of data strategy use cases, fill out relevant documentation • Coordinate and support data training and seminar activities as needed • Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner • Support data analytics or data policy • Work with Microsoft Outlook and other desk-top applications • Work with MS Power BI, Tableau or other similar self-service analytics toolsets OUTREACH AND COMMUNICATIONS Responsibilities: • Understand and support OICT's implementation of the Secretary-General's Data Strategy • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to schedule meetings, gather feedback, and keep meeting minutes • Support and update the list of data strategy use cases, fill out relevant documentation • Coordinate and support data training and seminar activities as needed • Support data analytics or data policy

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (2) Be enrolled in the FINAL academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (3) Have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and (2). Preferably in the areas of International Affairs, Information Policy or Law, Information and Data Strategy, Social Sciences, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Systems / Technology, Economics, Machine Learning, Data Visualization and Analytics, Web Analytics, Graphic Design, Web Design, User Interface Design, Human-computer Interaction, Digital Marketing or a relevant degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of above-mentioned degrees. Competencies: Knowledge in -DATA ANALYTICS and/or -COMMUNICATIONS No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.

Additional Information

Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant (such as F1 visa) status, will be required to obtain a G4 visa. Interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization (CPT/OPT), allowing them to undertake the internship. Terms of the internship programme: -The minimum duration of this internship is two months which can be extended up to a total period of six months. -Interns are expected to work on a full-time or part-time basis in the entity that has selected them, under the supervision of a staff member at an appropriate level. The working hours will be discussed with your supervisor at the time of the interview. Internships may be undertaken on the basis of flexible working arrangements if: -The receiving entity agrees in writing to accept an intern on the basis of flexible working arrangements. -Interns agree that they are required to work the equivalent of a minimum of at least two months on a full-time basis or four months on a part-time basis in order to receive recognition of service as an intern. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
