Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MLF) supports projects to reverse the deterioration of the Earth's stratospheric ozone layer and reducing consumption of high global warming hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). It was established in 1991 as the financial mechanism of the Montreal Protocol to assist developing countries (Article 5 countries in the language of the Protocol) in complying with their obligations under the Montreal Protocol. The Multilateral Fund is managed by an Executive Committee (ExCom) with an equal representation of seven industrialized and seven Article 5 countries that are elected annually by the Meeting of the Parties. The Committee reports every year to the Meeting of the Parties on its operations, and it is assisted by the Fund Secretariat, located in Montreal, Canada and administered by UNEP (www.multilateralfund.org).

This internship is located in UNEP/MLF at the Montreal duty station.

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Information Systems, the intern will provide assistance to the Multilateral Fund Secretariat with the following duties: - Assist in extracting relevant data and information from existing databases and prepare lists, tables and charts for use in the preparation of policy and project documents for consideration by the Executive Committee; - Assist, in consultation with relevant staff members, the development of the country profile structure for all Article 5 countries, and create profiles for the identified list of countries; - Assist relevant staff members in the development of the details of the content of a database for the servicing sector in countries that received support from the Multilateral Fund under hydrochlorofluorocarbons phase-out management plans (HPMPs), and support the development of the database; - Provide support in the organization and holding of meetings of the Executive Committee and any other events of the Multilateral Fund Secretariat; - Assist with the extraction and preparation of datasets for the migration to the new Secretariat Knowledge management system, and with preparation of content and material for the meeting portal and the MLF decisions handbook; - Assist, in consultation with relevant staff members, the coordination of activities around the content creation of the new Secretariat website and other related tasks; - Assists, in consultation with relevant staff members with maintaining an inventory of organizational needs and requirements, and assists with reports and communication; - Assists, in consultation with relevant staff members with the identification and analysis of patterns in data using standard techniques; - Assist with any other tasks, as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; d. Preferred area of study: Information and communications technology or related fields.

The applicant should have: a. Analytical skills, good communication skills both written and oral; b. Proficiency in computer skills, population of websites, use of databases, web-based platforms and relevant software; c. Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; d. The ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
