Org. Setting and Reporting This internship is located in the Division of Administration, Information and Communications Technology Service (ICTS) of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG).

The internship is for a minimum duration of three (3) months and can be extended up to six (6) months depending on the needs of the service.

The internship is unpaid and fulltime, and interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of the Chief of Infrastructure Team, Service Delivery Unit, Operations Management Section. ICTS' mission is to provide Information Technology and Communications services and support for the United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Organizations, Programme and Offices based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Responsibilities The programme is normally full-time, i.e. an intern is expected to work five days per week (9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.) in the department or office of the Secretariat to which he/she is assigned, carrying out his/her tasks under the supervision of a staff member - the supervisor.

Responsibilities:

Participate to a project to improve ICTS’ automatic server deployment and configuration processes based on Ansible. Bring more flexibility and variability into the process so that it could allow the automatic creation and deployment of a larger number of different types of servers based on server roles. The objective is to reduce the manual effort and time required to customize new servers during the post-installation phase. This project would improve ICTS dev-ops capacity and security posture. Participate to a project to migrate the existing server monitoring system to a new system, and conduct an analysis to 1.check for any gaps between the current server configuration and what is being monitored, 2.adjust threshold and alerts to ensure a proactive supervision of all servers, 3.collect and/or correct any piece of information currently missing or not up to date in our inventory systems. Contribution to the above projects may involve different activities, which will be assigned to the intern depending on the individual's background and experience.

Such activities may include, but are not limited to:

- Contributing to the specification and design of large or complex systems. - Defining the required characteristics and performance of the system, resolving potential conflicts between user requirements. - Participating in major aspects of network specification and design within the organization. - Contributing to the definition of network design policies, philosophies and criteria covering connectivity, capacity, interfacing, security, resilience, recovery, access and remote access. - Reviewing others' systems designs to ensure selection of appropriate technology, compliance with standards, efficient use of resources, and integration of multiple systems and technology. - Evaluating and undertaking impact analysis on major design options and assesses associated risks. Ensuring that the system design balances functional, service quality, security and systems management requirements. - Participating in preparing user requirements. - Identifying and engaging with users/ stakeholders. - Analyzing qualitative data (e.g. from site visits) and presenting the data in ways that can be used to drive design. Specifying measurable criteria for the required usability of the system. Defining test conditions and acceptance criteria for given requirements. - Assisting in the preparation of project plans and cooperates with business assurance and project staff to define resource requirements. - Providing advice on technical aspects of system development and integration and ensuring that relevant technical strategies, policies, standards and practices (including security) are applied correctly. - Maintaining awareness of opportunities provided by new technology to address challenges or to enable new ways of working. - Identifying new and emerging hardware and software technologies and products based on own area of expertise, assessing their relevance and potential value to the organization, contributing to briefings of staff and management, performing publications support activities such as drafting, illustrating, printing, etc. - Understanding Information Technology service design and management concepts, tools and methods and the way in which they are implemented.

More generally, interns shall:

1.Observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of the Organization notwithstanding their status as described in section 4 of the UN Internship Programme Administrative Instructions ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11;

2.Provide the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights and trademarks, with regard to material which bears a direct relation to,

3. or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the UN in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law;

4.Respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and of the receiving department/office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the UN;

5.Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate official in the receiving department/office, they may not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other external source any information which has become known to them by reason of their association with the UN or the receiving department/office, that they know or ought to have known has not been made public. They may not use any such information without the written authorization of the appropriate official, and such information may never be used for personal gain. These obligations also apply after the end of the internship with the UN; and

6.Refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or on the receiving department/office and will not engage in any activity which is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UN.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language would be an advantage (i.e. French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
