Background

The UNDP country office in South Africa supports the government of South Africa in achieving its development goals outlined in the National Development Plan 2030 as well as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UNDP country office’s activities are guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2020 -2025), the UNDP Strategic Plan (2022-2025), and the UNDP South Africa Country Programme Document (2020-2025). UNDP’s country programmes seek to contribute to South Africa’s social and economic transformational aspirations from policy support to implementation. UNDP brings knowledge of global best practices to South Africa through flagship knowledge reports including the Human Development Reports.

Under the guidance of the Resident Representative and the direct supervision of the Programme Manager: Inclusive Growth, the Intern will support the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of UNDP’s Inclusive Growth programme and projects. The Intern will collect and analyze relevant socio-economic data for the Inclusive Growth Unit’s policy support and programme development as well as briefings to management on socio-economic policies and trends and their relevant linkages to topical emerging issues in South Africa. The Intern will advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and support strategies and monitoring toward the achievement. The Intern will also lend assistance in strengthening stakeholder relations and enhancing UNDP South Africa’s visibility.

Duties and Responsibilities

We are looking for full-time, office-based interns who can contribute to the work of the Inclusive Growth Unit. As the Inclusive Growth portfolio is diverse, the Intern must be comfortable taking on a variety of assignments and new challenges. Under the direct supervision of Programme Manager: Inclusive Growth, the Intern will undertake the following tasks:

  • Assist in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the UNDP Inclusive Growth programme and projects
  • Collect and analyze socio-economic data relevant to the promotion of inclusive and sustainable growth in South Africa
  • Advocate and support the formulation of strategies and the monitoring of progress towards the achievement of the SDGs
  • Research potential partners and funding opportunities
  • Develop concept notes
  • Support stakeholder management
  • Support the planning and organization of events
  • Support the development of communication and knowledge management products
  • Attend conferences and meetings with stakeholders and prepare meeting minutes
  • Assist in drafting and preparing official documents
  • Any other tasks as may be required

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

At least a first degree in economics, development studies, social sciences, or other relevant areas. An advanced degree is preferred

Experience:

  • No work experience necessary but must be eager and proactive
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages
  • Understanding and familiarity with issues related to inclusive growth and the SDGs would be advantageous
  • Exposure to international development in inclusive growth and South Africa’s development would be a significant bonus

Computer Skills : Excelent

Langauage requirements: Proficiency in English and working knowledge of one of the local languages
