Org. Setting and Reporting United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.

UNICRI' s goals are: - to advance understanding of crime-related problems; - to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; - to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; - to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

These internships are with UNICRI's programme related to illicit financial flows, and the recovery of assets linked to organised criminal activity, corruption and the financing of terrorism. Each internship is for an initial period of two (2) months, with an opportunity of an additional extension for up to a total period of six (6) months. Preferable starting date: mid-January 2021 The internships are UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the relevant Programme Officer.

Due to the current international COVID19 emergency and related containment measures and international travel restrictions, the initial months of this internship will be done in TELECOMMUTING, i.e. remotely from home. Therefore, candidates must be able to telework and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment to perform assignments in teleworking. Should the COVID19-related restrictions and measures be removed, and should the move not impact any deadline or submission expected, the internships can be continued from UNICRI's Office in Brussels.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Senior Legal Officer (Asset Recovery), the interns will be involved in UNICRI activities concerning the harmonization and publication of eight separate reports related to illicit financial flows, and the recovery of assets linked to organised criminal activity, corruption and the financing of terrorism.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: − Review and harmonize content of eight separate reports related to illicit financial flows and the recovery of assets linked to organised crime, corruption and the financing of terrorism; − Conduct, if needed, any additional research, as well as obtain national counterpart feedback on issues related to illicit financial flows and asset recovery; _ Assist in analysing data from surveys conducted by UNICRI; _ Assist in the identification of open-source material (including photographic material) concerning a specific country – such may include country-specific resources that could be impacted by organised criminal activity and corruption; − Assist in facilitating the finalization of each report, including assistance to principals involved in the presentation format of the reports; _ Assist in the identification of national and international stakeholders and media channels (mailing details) for a pertinent and strategic distribution of the published reports.; − Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, professional reports; − Monitor regional and news sources for relevant articles and stories relevant to the project, programme or unit activities; − Coordinate, where needed, with relevant community of stakeholders, to obtain their feedback on the above-mentioned reports and on other issues pertinent to the project; − Draft other documents as needed for use by the project, including those related to pending cases in which assets may need to be traced and/or recovered, and those related to capacity-building needs of national counterparts; − Identify and maintain an updated list of names and contact details of key officials and civil society organizations in the project's beneficiary countries', as well as names and contact details of national and/or regional media representatives. − Assist in drafting, preparing and reviewing official project documents (e.g., reports, proposals). − Support the organization of meetings and conferences, issue briefing notes, talking points, articles, presentations, etc. − Translate, where possible, documents and correspondence; − Attend and summarize conferences and meetings; − Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in Studies relevant to the work of law enforcement, criminal justice, crime prevention and control, or other related fields; or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) in Studies relevant to the work of law enforcement, criminal justice, crime prevention and control, or other related fields.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Is your field of study closely related to the type of internship you are applying for (i.e. law enforcement, criminal justice, crime prevention and control or other related fields)? Will you be able to telework, and do you have all necessary arrangements and equipment to perform assignments in teleworking?

Languages Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Good writing skills (reporting/journalistic style), especially in English, are considered necessary. In addition good working knowledge of Russian and/or Arabic is highly desirable. Knowledge of other official languages of the United Nations is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of Armenian, Azerbaijani, Belarusian, Georgian, Romanian or Ukrainian is also an asset.

Interns are bound by the same duties and obligations as staff members, and the information to which an intern has access in the course of the internship must not be divulged to external parties.

On completion of their internship, interns are required to complete a substantive report on their assignments. This will be included in their file and will be forwarded, upon request, to the sponsoring institution, government body or private organization.

Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service.
