Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the part of the UN Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. • The Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and Sexual Harassment (PSEAH) Unit supports the vision of a humanitarian environment in which people caught up in crises feel safe and respected and can access the protection and assistance they need without fear of exploitation or abuse by any aid worker, and in which aid workers themselves feel supported, respected, and empowered to deliver such assistance in working environments free from sexual harassment. To help ensure robust, efficient, and accessible systems are in place to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation, abuse or sexual harassment allegations, the PSEAH Unit works towards the implementation of the IASC PSEAH Vision and Strategy 2022-2026 together with inter-agency partners. Furthermore, the PSEAH Unit supports OCHA leadership in mainstreaming PSEA in the operationalisation of transformational priorities as articulated in OCHA’s strategic plan 2022-26. As part of IASC and OCHA’s commitment to strengthening support to humanitarian leadership on PSEA, the unit manages the Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Capacity Project (PSEACap). The PSEACap project centrally employs and deploys PSEA Coordinators in high-risk contexts. The PSEAH Unit provides substantive policy guidance and technical support to these coordinators and country teams, enabling them to assist humanitarian leadership at the country level.
