Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

This internship shall be with the Evaluation and Oversight Section (EOS) located in OCHA New York, U.S.A., and/or Geneva, with a possibility of working remotely. The intern will be under the general guidance and direct supervision of OCHA-New York supervisor. The internship is being offered for a minimum period of two (2) months, with a possibility of extension up to a maximum period of six (6) months, beginning at a mutually agreed time.

Responsibilities The Evaluation and Oversight Section (EOS) manages evaluations of OCHA's work and of the wider humanitarian response, and act as OCHA's coordinator and entry-point for both internal and external audits. In addition, the EOS monitors the implementation of recommendations from these evaluations, as well as from audits, reviews and other assessments. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

•Researches, analyses and presents information gathered from diverse sources on assigned topics/issues. •Supports the planning and organization of meetings and briefings. •Drafts meeting notes, background papers and other documents, undertaking research in thematic areas if necessary. •Helps design various information materials, including publication covers, presentation templates, flyers, infographics and social media visuals. •Proposes ideas and solutions for better management of the Section’s information and knowledge products. •Identifies opportunities for OCHA’s evaluation/audit products to reach a wider audience. •Assists in collecting comments from stakeholders and in reviewing project documents. •Contributes to the preparation of various written documents, e.g. drafts sections of evaluations, background papers, audit presentation etc. •Maintains and uploads documents on team website. •Collaborates with programme/project managers on performance monitoring. •Researches and monitors a wide range of UN developments and news sources, including press releases, statements, news conferences, briefings and meetings for key developments, news or events relevant to specific evaluations. •Assists in preparing dissemination plans of ongoing evaluations and audit documents, including presentations, one-pagers, flayers, etc. •Assists in the Section’s work on evaluation and oversight. •Performs other related duties as required.

Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases. - Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors’ language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrate openness in sharing information and keeping people informed. - Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Students who have completed the academic year prior to the final year of a first university degree but have not yet commenced to the final year are eligible for the internship programme but must provide proof of their continued enrolment.

The University degree must be in the area of political science, social science, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences or in a related field.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.

Assessment Candidates will be assessed based on their Personal History Profile (PHP). Individual interviews may be conducted by the Hiring Manager directly for further consideration. Special Notice Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa.
