Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

As part of the Rohingya humanitarian response in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, UN Women has established a “Gender Hub” with the objective of strengthening accountability of all humanitarian actors for gender equality and empowerment of Rohingya refugee and host community women and girls in line with the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Policy on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Humanitarian Action and its Accountability Framework. The Gender Hub is managed by UN Women and is the technical engine of the Gender in Humanitarian Action Working Group (GiHAWG) and supports humanitarian actors in Cox’s Bazar more effectively integrate gender equality and women’s empowerment including prevention, mitigation and response to gender-based violence and sexual exploitation and abuse into their programmes through systematic gender mainstreaming for better service delivery and empowerment outcomes for the Rohingya refugees and host community women and girls.

The Gender Hub sits within UNWomen sub-office in Cox Bazar and build on ongoing efforts and expertise of the different gender and protection related coordination groups (Protection Working Group, Gender-Based Violence sub-sector, Preventing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Network). It offers integrated four pillars: Coordination, Technical Assistance, Capacity Development and Communications and Knowledge Management to sectors, humanitarian agencies, government and local partners to help them translate policies and commitments and various assessments and study recommendations on gender and women’s empowerment into tangible actions. It leads technical assistance to sectors through the development and implementation of sectors’ Gender and Inclusion Action Plans based on the annual JRP Sector Strategy. It provides capacity development and deliver and manage training, facilitating reflection events, provide coaching for humanitarian workers and local counterparts engaged in the refugee response on gender awareness, sensitivity and gender equality, gender and diversity, gender and GBV mainstreaming that is contextualized to the local situation. The Gender Hub supports knowledge management of assessments and research that will contribute to strengthening the knowledge and evidence-base for designing impactful interventions.

Reporting to the Gender Analyst, the Interns is responsible to assist for managing the planning, implementation, and reporting of the Technical Assistance, Capacity Development and KM pillars of the Gender Hub. She/he will work in close collaboration with the Gender Hub’s team, GiHAWG, ISCG Secretariat, Sector and Working Group Coordinators and Gender Officers, and UN Women Teams – Sub-office and BCO, Government Officials, multi and bilateral donors, sector partners’ Women Rights Organisations/Women Led Organisations and other civil society ensuring successful implementation of GiHAWG Annual Work Plan and the sector Gender and Inclusion Action Plan.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide support in the implementation on Capacity Development and Technical Assistance related trainings and learning circles for the Gender Hub and in GiHAWG.

  • Assist in the development of some basic training and learning circles materials;
  • Lead in documenting different training and learning circles through action photos with captions (with consent from the participants) and pass them to the Communications and Knowledge Management Team for review and posting in ISCG and UNWomen social media sites;
  • Regular updating the Capacity Development Calendar on the website;
  • Provide support to the Gender Analyst on the ISCG coordination related activities by attending meetings, events, and participating in groups and committees as needed.

2. Provide support to technical assistance and capacity development pillar:

  • Provide administrative and technical support to the Gender Analyst in supporting the annual sectors Gender and Inclusion Action Plans its development, implementation, and monitoring;
  • Provide support to sectors’ Gender Focal Points, sector coordinators and staff from partners on key gender mainstreaming documents and tools such as good practices from GiHAWG and Gender Hub.

3. Provide support on Knowledge Management pillar:

  • Work with KM Analyst to provide inputs on key documents ie. good practices video on sector’s gender mainstreaming;
  • Provide inputs to donor reports, focusing on results, outputs and outcomes;
  • Provide back-up cover support in taking minutes of GiHAWG and WELTWG monthly meetings.

4. Other responsibilities:

  • Adhere to policies and commitments of UN Women towards Gender equality and women and girls empowerment.

Functional Competencies:

  • Sound knowledge in gender equality and women’s empowerment;
  • Experience in capacity development, technical assistance and knowledge management related activities;
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting of concept notes, strategies and reporting skills;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Knowledge of gender responsive programming: gender mainstreaming and gender transformative humanitarian and development projects.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: social sciences, human rights, gender/women's studies, international development or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Meet one of the following:
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; or
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
