Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is located in the Environment Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe based in Geneva. UNECE Environment Division contributes to the overall objectives and mandate of UNECE as a multilateral platform facilitating greater economic integration and cooperation among its member States, and to the broad aim of the Environment subprogramme to safeguard the environment and human health, and to promote sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Responsibilities The intern is expected to contribute to the work of the Environment Division as follows: Under the supervision of the Programme Manager of the Environmental Performance Review Programme (EPR), the intern will: (a) Provide general support to the preparation of the second EPR of Mongolia and the fourth EPRs of Montenegro and Tajikistan; (b) Support the work under the Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP), in particular through drafting documents, and support the activities for the preparation of the upcoming session of THE PEP Steering Committee; (c) Provide support to the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Programme, as required, including for the follow-up on recommendations from the pan-European environmental assessment and the Shared Environmental Information System progress report on waste and circular economy, support to the implementation of an EU-funded project and the development of National State of the Environment reports and implementation of relevant capacity development activities (e.g., assisting in the organization of webinars, drafting and editing project documents, and training materials). (d) Provide support in the preparatory work for the 21st session of the Joint Task Force on Environmental Statistics and Indicators to be held in mid-October 2024. (e) Provide support in promoting the UNECE guidelines for the application of Environmental Indicators – 2023 Edition, as required; (f) Provide general assistance, as required (e.g. drafting and editing of documents, background research, and correspondence).

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: - Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). Be computer literate in standard software applications; For this internship, studies in environmental policy, environmental law, environmental sciences, international relations or equivalent are required Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Applicants for all countries are accepted and under-represented or un-represented countries in the UN are encouraged to apply. No professional work experience is required for participation in the Internship Programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French or Russian is an asset.
