Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The internship is for a period of six (6) months. It is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer of UNEP New York Office, the intern will: • Support UNEP NYO in organization of meetings related to the Working Group on Transforming the Extractive Industries for Sustainable Development. • Create and manage website content. • Support UNEP NYO in developing two-pagers, data visualization documents, policy briefs and other communications material. • Attend and summarize key discussions on meetings of different events in the United Nations General Assembly, High-Level Political Forum, and other high-level meetings in person and online. • Support managing logistics and communications in Microsoft Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) focusing on natural resource management, mineral resources, environmental sciences or related field. b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) focusing on natural resource management, mineral resources, environmental sciences or related field. c. Have graduated with a university degree focusing on natural resource management, mineral resources, environmental sciences or related field as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Be computer literate in standard software applications such as Microsoft Office, POWER BI, or related data analytics tools. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
