Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The Latin America and the Caribbean Office located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States, with a population of about 650 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly of UNEP (UNEA).

The overall objective of the Environmental Governance Unit is to support national and regional decision-making processes for environmental governance, contribute to the strengthening of capacities to implement international environmental agreements at the national level through appropriate legal and institutional measures and promotes the integration of environmental sustainability in development at all levels.

Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Governance Regional Coordinator in the Latin America and the Caribbean Office, the intern(s) will support the Caribbean Biological Corridor (CBC) project.

The CBC is an Initiative of the ministries of environment of four countries: Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. It works with the organizational support of the Latin America and Caribbean Office of UNEP and the financial support provided by the European Union through various projects.

The current project, Strengthening the Caribbean Biological Corridor, seeks to establish a strong, collectively sustained and institutionalized approach at the regional level for the conservation, maintenance and governance of terrestrial and maritime biodiversity in the hot spot of the Caribbean Islands, initially focused on Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, but with a progressive and well-structured expansion to other countries and territories. It will build and demonstrate significant positive links between conservation, connectivity, livelihoods, and poverty reduction through targeted field activities and a targeted communication program. It will bring with it a sustainable and integrated knowledge of the system for maintaining biodiversity and biological connectivity, more harmonized policies and instruments, adequate and compatible training among the participating countries and institutions, as well as sustainable cooperation mechanisms between countries and institutions at the political level, scientific, technical and civil society. Selected project actions will help raise awareness about the Caribbean Biological Corridor, while partnerships with programs and stakeholders involved in broader field actions will support the achievement of the Caribbean Biological Corridor objectives.
