Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environment sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing issues at the global and regional level. The internship position is located in the UNEP/New York Office.

The internship is for a period of six (6) months. It is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days (35-40 hours) per wee kunder the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the relevant Senior Programme Officer, UNEP/New York Office the intern will:

•Attend and summarize key discussions on meetings at UN Headquarters, including meetings organized by the UN General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Security Council and UN missions in New York, as well as UN interagency meetings. •Research and summarize key developments related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the UN system reform, including coverage of discussions in relevant inter-governmental and UN inter-agency fora. •Assist the work of the UNEP New York Office to support Member States in intergovernmental negotiations related to the environment. •Assist with logistics and organization of UNEP events and side events, follow up on Agenda 2030 and other environment related events at UN Headquarters in New York.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Experience in summarizing and writing documents related to environmental issues is highly desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.

United Nations Considerations According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
