Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The intern will work with the Cities Unit, Energy and Climate Branch, of the Paris-based Economy Division. The intern will be involved in the implementation of activities related to the work of the Cool Coalition and District Energy in Cities Initiative.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Kindly note that candidates will be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging any travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Responsibilities 1. Development of resources and trainings on district energy systems: a) Work with partners of the District Energy in Cities Initiative to prepare primary and secondary research on integration of district energy systems with other city systems, sustainable heating and cooling and measures against extreme heat especially their application in developing countries. This includes preparing and reviewing: technical case studies from city interviews and desk research, policy analyses, benefits analyses, review of modelling tools and training materials preparation

2. Assist country implementation activities on district energy and urban cooling: a) Review ongoing work of the District Energy in Cities Initiative across 14 countries and support country-level activities and engagement including in India, Viet Nam, Chile, Egypt etc; b) Support implementation of urban cooling and cold chain activities in India, Viet Nam, Tunisia and Morocco c) Assist in the administrative duties of the partnership, support follow up with new partners and assist legal duties linked to the contracting procedure. d) Assist in the running of the district energy website, communication materials and online presentation of case studies, research and trainings. e) Support research for funding proposals on district energy and urban cooling systems;

3. Support with the logistical preparation of webinars and events for the District Energy in Cities Initiative and on urban cooling a) Research and reach out to potential speakers and trainers b) Support in the activities of the partnership in (virtual) international conferences including preparing PowerPoint slides and speaking points for webinars and conferences. c) Support in drafting concept and briefing notes, etc. d) Conduct city-profile research relating to their environmental, social and economic commitment to Sustainability.

4. Regularly updating the visual tools, infographics and reference materials.

5. Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings, including providing technical assistance during virtual meetings.

6. Assist in other tasks associated with the implementation of the Cities Unit team's projects, as needed and directed by supervising staff member.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:¿ a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);¿ b. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.¿

Preferred area of study: Bachelors’ or Masters, preferably related to environment, energy, cities, international relations or communications.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
