Org. Setting and Reporting The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is an intergovernmental treaty, under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), concerned with the conservation of wildlife and habitats on a global scale. This internship is located within the Avian Team of the UNEP/CMS Secretariat in Bonn (Germany). The internship is UNPAID. The intern will assist in the development and daily management of a wide spectrum of bird related activities for CMS.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Avian Unit, and in cooperation with the rest of the members of the team, the selected intern will: - Carry out a strategic review of CMS Resolution 12.11 (Rev.COP13) Flyways with a special focus on those CMS instruments, working groups and task forces that implement activities compatible with a Flyway approach to the conservation of migratory species at global level. - Support the Avian Team in quantifying and prioritizing the top actions needed to strengthen its work on this topic - Special focus will be given to relevant CMS instruments such as: a) The Working Group on Flyways b)The Americas Flyways Framework Task Force c)The Central Asian Flyway d)The African-Eurasian Migratory Landbirds Action Plan (AEMLAP) e)The Energy Task Force (ETF) and f)The Intergovernmental Task Force on Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds in the Mediterranean (MIKT) - Attend relevant workshops, lectures, seminars and conferences related to the Flyways decisions, resolutions and instruments of the CMS - Support the Avian Team in quantifying and prioritizing the top actions needed to strengthen its work on this topic - Present the results of the strategic analysis to the members of the Avian Team and to selected staff of the CMS Secretariat

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

A degree program in biology, ecology, environment, geography, law or international relations.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Experience in conducting policy and/or conservation assessments is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of Spanish is an advantage. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
