Org. Setting and Reporting The UNODC Programme Office in The Gambia provides technical support to countries in line with the mandate of the international community. The West African Network of Central Authorities and Prosecutors (WACAP) is a network of judicial cooperation made up of focal points from the 15 countries of the Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO), plus Mauritania and Chad. WACAP aims to strengthen operational cooperation and the capacity of international criminal cooperation authorities in West Africa to combat all forms of organized and serious crime. UNODC provides secretarial functions, technical support, and network training.

The communication component of the network must support advocacy activities, promote a strong visual identity through a graphic charter and visibility products.

The UNODC Programme Office in The Gambia is opening an internship position for a period of six months with a desired starting date in June 2022.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a professional staff of the office to which they are assigned.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Responsibilities The West African Network of Central Authorities and Prosecutors (WACAP) has an important "Communication - Visibility" component with the production and content-making component on virtual platforms. The role of the intern among others, is to strengthen the production of communication content for the web site, by publishing newsletters on MailChimp and managing social media accounts for an increase in the visibility of the objectives pursued by the network, among other duties. The intern will be recruited for a period of six (6) months and will be under the direct supervision of the WACAP Coordinator. The successful candidate will be assigned to the UNODC Programme Office in Banjul, The Gambia. This role would require interaction with project team members located at HQ, at the Regional Office (Dakar, Senegal) and other Field Offices across West Africa, as well as with national and sub-regional counterparts in support of the effective implementation of the project.

General duties of this internship include, but are not limited to: ¿ Provide daily support of activities as delineated by the project coordinator. ¿ Support the organization of international/regional training, capacity-building, and meetings and assist with the preparation of agendas, concept notes and logistics. ¿ Support the creation, collection and formatting of training and conference presentation materials. ¿ Draft official communication materials, press releases, speeches and articles for project team members and the UNODC Programme Office’s management personnel. ¿ Support the unit in helping to maintain and update the website and social media accounts. ¿ Facilitate the production and dissemination of public information material through website, brochures, posters, letters, e-mails, and broadcasts in various languages as required reaching a wide public audience. ¿ Contribute to the drafting and translation (to/from English, Portuguese or French) of relevant documents such as newsletters, progress reports, training reports etc. ¿ Assist with the creation of project monitoring tools for the project. ¿ Any other tasks included under project activities related to monitoring and communication.

Uses time efficiently.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants must (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

  • OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.

  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Candidates should have relevant coursework in Law, LLM, Political Science, International Relations, Global Affairs, Public Administration, Management and/or Design, Web Development, Strategic Design and Management, Information Design, Public Relations, Media Studies, Journalism or Data Visualization.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages ¿ English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in spoken and written English and French is required.
