Org. Setting and Reporting United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1965 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental, and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’s goals are to:

¿ advance understanding of crime-related problems; ¿ foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; ¿ support the respect of international instruments and other standards; ¿ facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This position is located in the Global Programme on Security of Major Sport Events, and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism Terrorism (PVE). The Global Programme aims to promote the development and adoption of advanced policies and practices to enhance the security of major sporting events, while promoting the use of sport and its values as a tool to prevent radicalization and violent extremism. The internship is for an initial period of two months, with a possibility for extension of up to a total period of six months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the programme.

The preferred starting date is May 2022.

Due to the current international COVID19 emergency and related containment measures and international travel restrictions, the initial months of this internship will be done in TELECOMMUTING, i.e. remotely from home. Therefore, the candidate must be able to telework and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment to perform assignments in teleworking. Should the COVID19-related restrictions and measures be removed, and should the decision to further extend the internship period be taken, the internship can be continued from UNICRI's Office in Turin.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the relevant Programme Officer, the intern will be involved in UNICRI activities concerning development and adoption of advanced policies and practices to enhance the security of major events and crowded spaces, as well as promoting the use of sport and its values as a tool to prevent radicalization and violent extremism.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: - Conducting research on the various topics related to the Global Programme, including security planning, protection of vulnerable targets and major event security ; - Contributing to the development of the e-tool on the security of major events as well as crowded spaces and vulnerable targets protection trough the identification and upload of relevant documents and research; - Contributing to the drafting of papers, reports and other written outputs, including speeches and power point presentations; - Contributing to the organization of expert group meetings and webinars; - Perform other related duties upon request.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in the field of law; criminal justice, security, or other related fields; or

(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) in the field of law; criminal justice, security, or other related fields.

In addition, interested candidates must: - Be computer literate in standard software applications. - Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.

In this context, all internationally recruited staff members shall be required to move periodically to discharge new functions within or across duty stations under conditions established by the Secretary-General.
