Org. Setting and Reporting The intern will be part of the Illicit Crop Monitoring Programme (ICMP) at UNODC Headquarters, Vienna, Austria. The ICMP is located in the Programme Management and Development Unit (PDMU), Research and Analysis Branch (RAB), Division of Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA). ICMP promotes the development and maintenance of a global network of illicit crop monitoring systems in coca and opium poppy cultivating countries. ICMP provides overall coordination and technical support to annual illicit crop surveys at the country level and monitors the socio-economic conditions of households that are living in areas with illicit crop cultivation and/or areas where illicit crops have been replaced by alternative development initiatives. For this purpose, it conducts research on alternative development, develops new survey initiatives, analyses and validates survey results and publishes survey reports.

The ICMP internship is for a period of three months starting in August 2020 with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the office.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Given the current situation due to COVID-19, selected interns may have to start working remotely from their country of nationality/residence subject to travel restrictions in effect both in their home country and Austria as well as availability of affordable air or surface transportation as applicable.

Responsibilities The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

•Carry out the visual interpretation of Aerial Photos collected in Nigeria in the framework of the Cannabis Survey; •Assist in the detection and digitalization of cannabis fields within a GIS environment; •Assist in the analysis of satellite imagery for detection and digitalization of artisanal mining sites in Afghanistan; •Liaise with Universities for cooperating in remote sensing related research; •Assist in presenting results in reports, graphs, tables and maps, as well as assist in the report writing and in preparing presentations on the key findings of the research; •Assist in the analysis and visualization of geospatial data including remote sensing data; •Keep abreast of innovative technologies in the field of remote sensing and GIS; •Perform other tasks related to the implementation of the programme, as requested.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

•Be computer literate in standard software applications; working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point is required. Practical experience with GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS) is required. Knowledge of a statistical software package, preferably R is desirable. Knowledge of a programming language (e.g. Python) is an asset.

•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;

•Have a keen interest in the countries covered by the illicit crop monitoring programme, including Afghanistan, Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria and Peru;

•Have a degree in the field of remote sensing, geography, agricultural sciences, environmental science, statistics, development studies, or related field; and

•Knowledge of remote sensing theory, principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data, and statistical/analytical skills are required;.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
