Org. Setting and Reporting The mission of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is to contribute to the achievement of security and justice for all by making the world safer from drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism. The work of the Country Office in Myanmar contributes to the Regional Programme Framework for East Asia and the Pacific in close cooperation with the Regional Office for Southeast Asia in Bangkok. UNODC Office in Myanmar works to strengthen the country’s legal and technical capacities to prevent and stop the trafficking of people, drugs, natural resources and smuggling of migrants; supports the judicial system in tackling corruption; strengthens criminal justice response to gender based violence and supports the recruitment and retention of women in the police force; supports governments and civil society organizations to scale up access to a comprehensive package of services for drug users and the prevention, treatment and care of HIV among people who inject drugs; and supports Myanmar to sustain the reduction/elimination of opium poppy cultivation and prevent its expansion into high-risk areas.

The objective of the internship is to provide substantive organizational and logistical assistance to the staff/experts work at UNODC’s Office in Myanmar, particularly as it relates to the office’s work on gender-based violence and anti-corruption. In this process, the intern will gain knowledge of the substantive and operational aspects of UNODC’s work, and indirectly the functioning of the United Nations, as well as the related dimensions of gender-based violence, criminal justice and anti- corruption.

The envisaged duration of the internship is six months, beginning in September. The position is UNPAID and interns are required to work full-time during office hours (five days, 40 hours per week). Time is allowed for outside research work and interviews. After the six-month assignment, the intern will develop an understanding of numerous criminal justice and crime related issues in Myanmar and related national, regional and international legislation and frameworks. In addition, this internship will help the intern understand UNODC approaches to combating crime and drug related issues in the country and broaden his/her understanding of UNODC’s missions and obtain the working experience in the UN system.

Given the current situation due to COVID-19, selected interns may have to start working remotely from their country of nationality/residence subject to travel restrictions in effect both in their home country and Yangon as well as availability of affordable air or surface transportation as applicable.

Responsibilities Under the overall guidance of the Country Manager in Myanmar, and directly reporting to the Programme Coordinator, specific assignments may include but not limited to:

  • Conduct research on topics of relevance to UNODC Myanmar’s Country Programme (e.g. gender-based violence, corruption and organized crime);
  • Help design infographics, awareness raising material, banners for social media campaigns and flyers/advocacy materials in non-standard formats, such as bookmarks;
  • Document events in photo/video, editing photographs and video, helping to produce video clips;
  • Contribute to creating online content, including researching and selecting information, forming messages and taglines for print and online publications, and embedding photos or videos;
  • Assist colleagues with ideas regarding design style and format;
  • Support the programme team with the drafting and editing of reports, proposals, presentations, official communications, press releases, speeches and articles;
  • Provide logistical support on activities such as the organization of conferences, events and workshops;
  • Support in-office activities such as the office sustainability strategy;
  • Support other UNODC programmes and complete other tasks as assigned.

    Competencies - Strong interest in working in the UN system;

  • Demonstrable skills in analytical thinking, communication and research;
  • Good IT competence, command of main office software programmes, internet communication, social media and searching skills;
  • Graphic design skills (Typography, illustration, photography, etc,) and ability to use graphic design software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop etc);
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work under pressure within an international setting;
  • Ability to perform a variety of administrative tasks;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and a strong team working capacity;
  • Experience developing capacity building materials or working with the criminal justice system are strong assets.

    Education - Currently enrolled in a graduate degree programme of a recognized institution in related fields (Communications, journalism, graphic design, media, public relations, or related field). Exceptions can be made for students finishing a bachelor’s degree, with other relevant qualifications.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Languages - Full professional proficiency in English with fluency in speaking, reading and writing;

  • Knowledge of Myanmar, Shan and/or Kachin languages are an asset.
