Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This position is located at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Division of Administrative Services (DAS), within the Information and Communications Technology Service (ICTS), Nairobi, Kenya. Under the direct supervision of the Information Systems Officer the intern will: • Using statistical techniques, analyze results from data to create ongoing reports. • Review information to identify and interpret any patterns or useful trends in complex data sets. • Ensure required datasets are regularly and promptly updated. • Create tables, views, and procedures on Microsoft SQL Server to support data processing and cleansing for report development. • Create technical training manuals to provide support to other teams and users, as well as gathering user feedback so that improvements can be identified to simplify processes and increase productivity. • Acquire data from primary and secondary sources to develop reports and dashboards. • Identify areas where data can be used to improve business activities, defining business users’ requirements.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate school programme in information and communication technology or related area; (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of degree programme in information and communication technology or related area; or (c) if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least three years of fulltime studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an information and communication technology degree or related degree. In addition, possessing any of the following skills will be an added advantage: • Analytical skills – ability to interpret and analyze data to draw conclusions and identify patterns. • Computer knowledge – this position uses statistical and analytical software. • Scripting languages – be familiar with scripting languages such as .Net, Python and SQL. • Problem-solving skills – identifying issues or ways to improve systems that are already in place is a key job function, therefore must be a critical thinker who can successfully troubleshoot and solve problems. • Knowledge of data modeling principles/methods including conceptual, logical & physical Data Models. • Ability to utilize Business Intelligence tools (Power BI / Qlik, Tableau, Microsoft, Business Objects etc) to represent insights. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English language is required for this internship. Knowledge of French would be desirable.

Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
