Org. Setting and Reporting Applications are sought for two internship positions within the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme of the Regional Office for Eastern Africa of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC ROEA). The internship programme offers a practical educational experience in the field of criminal justice and provides interns with the opportunity to work in a multicultural intergovernmental organization.

The Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme supports Member States to strengthen the rule of law through the prevention of crime and the promotion of effective, fair, humane and accountable criminal justice systems in line with the United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice and other relevant international instruments. Moreover, UNODC co-implements the Programme for Legal Empowerment and Aid Delivery in Kenya (PLEAD),a partnership between the Government of Kenya, European Union, United Nations and civil society that is improving the delivery of justice services and use of alternatives to imprisonment.

The Internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work 5 days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of the Head of Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme of the UNODC Regional Office in Eastern Africa.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, interns may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. The intern must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Responsibilities The interns shall undertake the following duties: -Support the substantive work of the Programme on crime prevention and criminal justice. -Conduct research on crime prevention and criminal justice issues. -Participate in the planning of the Programme’s activities, such as meetings, workshops, conferences and trainings, as well as draft reports and minutes. -Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points and speeches. -Support the preparation of briefing material and other documentation for meetings and events with stakeholders and partners, including other UN agencies; -Support writing, reviewing and updating social media content to raise visibility of the Programme’s work. -Support procurement activities (eg drafting of terms of reference). -Perform other tasks as necessary.

-Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organisational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decision may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme in in law, international relations, criminology or political science (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme in in law, international relations, criminology or political science (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

- Be computer literate in standard software applications;

- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language and/or Kiswahili is an asset.
