Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.​

The intern will work with the Cities Unit, Energy and Climate Branch, of the Paris-based Economy Division. The intern will be involved in the implementation of activities related to the work of the Cool Coalition. The Cool Coalition is a global multi-stakeholder network that connects a wide range of key actors from government, cities, international organizations, businesses, finance, academia, and civil society groups to facilitate knowledge exchange, advocacy and joint action towards a rapid global transition to efficient and climate-friendly cooling. The Secretariat of the Cool Coalition is based in UNEP.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Kindly note that candidates will be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging any travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.​

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of Programme Officers of the Paris-based Economy Division, the intern will work on the implementation of activities of the Cool Coalition. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

1. Development of a resource and training hub for efficient, climate-friendly cooling - Work with partners and the technical experts of the Cool Coalition to design trainings, webinars, discussions (or other forms of innovative delivery for training) on urban cooling and extreme heat, integrated cold chain, national cooling plans and others - Conduct research and perform analytical work to develop draft and review policy and technology briefs and stories on sustainable energy and cooling solutions and practices

2. Delivery of outreach, high-level and technical events for the Cool Coalition - Provide support to the Cool Coalition Secretariat for technical and high-level events, virtual and in presence, including by drafting and sharing invitations, support the event’s logistics, drafting speakers’ briefs, presentations, event reports, and distributing follow-up event material - Support the implementation of targeted communication campaigns at the global, national and regional levels on the impacts of cooling and sustainable solutions

3. Assist implementation activities on extreme heat and urban cooling - Provide support to country-level and city-level activities on urban cooling and extreme heat – e.g. passive cooling at urban and building level, and energy efficient cooling supply solutions - Support project planning, partner engagement, communication and outreach

4. Delivery of strengthened Cool Coalition governance through technical, logistical and facilitation support - Support the organisation of Cool Coalition partner and country meetings, including by managing the related events logistics, power point, note-taking and follow-up activities - Assist the facilitation of Cool Coalition Working Groups as needed - Support the organisation of networking and capacity building events with MDBs and other donors to accelerate the financing of cooling related projects, initiatives and strategies - Help develop a gap analysis on action taken towards the achievement of UNFCCC pathway to net-zero cooling

5. Regularly updating the visual tools, infographics and reference materials.

6. Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings, including providing technical assistance during virtual meetings.

7. Assist in other tasks associated with the implementation of the Cities Unit team's projects, as needed and directed by supervising staff member.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:​ a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);​ b. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.​

Preferred area of study: Bachelors’ or Masters, preferably related to environment, energy, cities, international relations or communications.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
