ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking to fill an internship position under the WFP Nepal of the Bureau for Asia & the Pacific (RBB). The position will be based in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Internship will be for an initial period of six months starting from ASAP.

JOB PURPOSE

Assisting more than 90 million people in 83 countries each year, the World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience.

WFP has been working in the country since 1963, supporting the Government to develop greater food security among vulnerable communities and build resilience to disasters. WFP’s work in Nepal primarily targets the most food insecure, those in the hard-to-reach districts of the Mid- and Far-Western Hills and Mountains.

In support of the Communications Officer, the intern will create specialized and general communications products that support the UN World Food Programme’s Nepal Country Office (CO). These products will be aimed at maintaining and enhancing WFP’s visibility and reputation in the field and globally to support fundraising activities as well as general knowledge of WFP’s work. Housed under the External Relations unit, the Communications Intern may also be requested to support tasks related to partnership as and when necessary.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP as a contribution towards basic subsistence costs depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • Depending on the duty station of assignment, WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled and have attended University courses in the last 12 months inclusive of having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months. Master's degree is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point);
  • Fluent in English
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Publisher, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and social-media experience required, additional experience in photography and video-and-phot-editing software would be an asset.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under the direct supervision of the Communications officer and overall guidance of the Head of the External Relations, the intern will be provided with close mentoring, guidance, and technical supervision and shall carry out the following tasks:

  • Provide coordination, administrative and specialized products and services, to support the Communications Officer in the development, preparation and implementation of the communications plan.
  • Monitor and coordinate materials, schedules, facilities, and clearances, and provide support for special events, and video/film, photographic and radio projects, including attending relevant fora held by UN, Government, and NGOs in Kathmandu.
  • Under clear guidance, prepare content for traditional and social media platforms and networks, as well as printed materials to enhance coverage and support of WFP’s activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages and standards.
  • Support the Communications Officer in generating donor specific visibility content including, text, photos, videos and audio for use across a range of integrated online platforms, in order to support global and country fund-raising activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages as well as with donor conditions and established visibility and communications plans
  • Manage and maintain records and databases, such as the journalist and the contact list of media outlets, ensuring the information is accurate, organized and readily available for access by the unit and relevant staff of WFP Nepal.
  • Respond to requests for support as needed by the External Relations unit, following established processes and obtaining guidance, in a timely manner.
  • Other services and products rendered as required in support of WFP Nepal.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

Entry level position, with relevant communications experience managing an organisational twitter handle, producing communications material for a groupd or organisation preferred.
