Org. Setting and Reporting This internship will aim at assisting the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG) of the ISA Secretariat in undertaking a study on challenges and opportunities in the multicultural environment of international training and capacity building programmes, with a view to increasing the organization’s understanding of cultural and scientific challenges of capacity building and trainee programmes. The minimum period for this position is for six weeks. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. The internship can take place remotely or in situ. In the case where the intern selected chooses to undertake the internship at the Headquarters of ISA, all costs will be the responsibility of the intern. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Senior Policy Officer and Special Assistant to the Secretary-General. The following responsibilities can be adapted, as appropriate, to fit each intern.

Responsibilities The selected applicant, who will be required to demonstrate experience in working with capacity-building/development professionals, will be required to:

  • Assist in identifying and reviewing capacity-building/development strategies, policies and relevant documents, developing concrete case studies to support research and information briefs, researching on the potential implications of cultural differences in the context of international ocean-related training programmes/initiatives;
  • Assist in the compilation of relevant cultural anthropological aspects of ocean-related capacity-building/development programmes and activities developed and implemented by ISA and preparing reports on the materials and case studies through careful analyses.
  • Explore existing and potential future challenges and opportunities for the development of the programmatic approach of ISA for capacity development in the multicultural environment;
  • Provide research for background/information materials;
  • Initiate and carry out assigned tasks/special projects.

Education To qualify for an internship within EOSG, and in line with the eligible criteria set out in the ISA Internship Programme, each candidate should be able to demonstrate the following:

1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme in ethnology, (cultural) anthropology, political sciences, international relations or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in ethnology, (cultural) anthropology, political sciences, international relations or related field (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree in ethnology, (cultural) anthropology, political sciences, international relations or related field (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.

2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar.

3. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Knowledge in ethnology and cultural anthropology is required

Languages English or French are the working languages of ISA. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
