Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This position is established at West Asia office - Beirut, Lebanon under the direct supervision of the Regional Coordinator for Nature Action. The intern will : Primarily assist in various tasks relating to biodiversity law and governance in the West Asia region. Tasks will include research and analysis of national reports submitted to international conventions, implementation progress and compliance, institutional frameworks for transboundary cooperation for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, preparing notes and presentations or resource materials, and other tasks as may be required. Areas of work may include: - Conducting research and analysis implementation of policies relating to biodiversity and ecosystems - Analyze data on bird migration, hunting, wildlife trafficking, trade, etc. to identify transboundary issues relating to conservation of biodiversity - Prepare notes on governance structures in the countries and relevant institutional frameworks - Assisting in the drafting of advocacy briefs and awareness materials - Collating data and historical information on case laws that contributed to biodiversity and wildlife conservation in the region - Fulfill other duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

  1. Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following academic qualifications: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme in law or a related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in law (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree in law and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation. 2. Knowledge of environmental law, multilateral environmental agreements, and international development policy; 3. Good communication and writing skills in English are required, and knowledge of the Arabic language is desirable; 4. Good drafting, planning, and organizational skills and attention to detail are essential. Preferred Area of Study: Law, Environmental Law, International Development Policy, Public Policy, or any other related fields. N/A

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency of Arabic language is Desirable.
