Org. Setting and Reporting United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Reserach Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI' s goals are:

- to advance understanding of crime-related problems; - to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; - to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; - to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This position is located in UNICRI's Knowledge Management Center “Security Improvements through Research, Technology and Innovation (SIRIO)". Its scope is to analyze and understand the global impacts, opportunities and challenges of technological change, including in the areas of augmented and virtual reality (AR, VR), big data analytics, digital biology and biotech, nanotech and digital printing, networks and computing systems, supply chain security and decentralized technologies such as blockchain.

The internship is for an initial period of 2 months, with an opportunity of extension up to a total period of 6 months. Preferably, this internship shall commence in mid-May 2021. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Programme Manager Officer and the Head of Unit.

Due to the current international COVID19 emergency and related containment measures and international travel restrictions, the initial months of this internship will be done in TELECOMMUTING, i.e. remotely from home. Therefore, the candidate must be able to telework and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment to perform assignments in teleworking. Should the COVID19-related restrictions and containment measures be removed, and should the decision to further extend the internship be taken, the internship can be continued from UNICRI's Office in Geneva, Switzerland.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Programme Manager Officer and the Head of Unit, the intern will be involved in UNICRI activities concerning the use of Big Data analytics and visualization to monitor of Italian organized crime activities.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: −Collecting data and conduct research on organized crime (in particular Italian organized crime) and the infiltration of the legal economy; −Using a Big Data digital platform to conduct social network analysis, identify trends and better understand how organized crime (in particular Italian organized crime) is operating to acquire control of economic operators, including in the production and distribution of fake/illegal COVID-19 related medicinal products; −Attend and summarize conferences and meetings; −Contributing to the drafting of reports and other written outputs, including speeches and power point presentations; −Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in the field of law; criminal justice, crime prevention and control, or other related fields; or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) in the field of law; criminal justice, crime prevention and control, or other related fields.

In addition, interested candidates must: −Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point); −Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; −Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Is your field of study closely related to the type of internship you are applying for (i.e.law; criminal justice, crime prevention and control, or other related fields)? Will you be able to telework, and do you have all necessary arrangements and equipment to perform assignments in teleworking?

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Fluency in Italian is also required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations.
