Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environment authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economics in transition.

The Caribbean Environment Programme promotes regional co-operation for the protection and sustainable development of the marine environment of the 38 Member States and Territories of the Wider Caribbean Region. Established in 1981, it formed the basis for the development and adoption of the Cartagena Convention and its Protocols on Oil Spills, Marine Biodiversity (Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife – SPAW) and Pollution (Land Based Sources of Marine Pollution – LBS). Three sub-programmes of the Caribbean Environment Programme are Pollution; Marine Biodiversity and Communication.

Within UNEP CEP, the Principal Coordination Officer is responsible the overall management of UNEP-CAR/RCU (Regional Coordinating Unit of the Caribbean Environment Programme -CEP) which is the Secretariat in support of the implementation of the Cartagena Convention and its associated Protocols with reference to the marine and coastal environment of the Wider Caribbean; overall coordination of activities, meetings and implementation of subsequent decisions as well as other programme and project meetings relating to the work of CEP; oversee the programmatic and administrative management of CAR/RCU including budgetary, administrative and human resource requirements and supervision of the CAR/RCU staff; and support the global Regional Seas Programme and the implementation of its strategies, Regional Seas related decisions taken at the UN Environment Assembly, the implementation of the GPA as well as coordination as need be with regional and global partners, other MEAs and UNEP in general.

The duration of the Internship is for a minimum of three months, with a possibility for extension up to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the Organization. The Internship is UNPAID and full time. The Interns will work remotely, five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Principal Coordination Officer.

Responsibilities Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

•Carry out research, analysis and drafting of documents, and present data and information to support the implementation of projects and activities including the preparation of briefs, information material and presentations;

•Assist in the compilation, design, and dissemination of info-graphics, factsheets, and awareness materials including for posting on the CEP and/or relevant project websites, social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linked-in), display at national/regional events and inclusion in monthly and quarterly newsletters;

•Assist with the preparation of Outreach and Promotional material for major environmental commemorative days including: International Day of Biodiversity, World Ocean's Day, World Environment Day and International Coastal Clean Up Day as well as project related initiatives;

•Assist in the update of the CEP and project Focal Point and Photo Databases;

•Provide support to the implementation of programme and project activities at UNEP CEP including representation at national events, exhibitions; meetings of environmental clubs etc.;

•Assist in preparing for Intergovernmental Meetings including summarizing reports on the implementation of the Cartagena Convention and its Protocols in member states;

•Prepare and monitor a tracking tool for all requests from Headquarters for which the Office of the Principal Coordination Officer is responsible;

•Review the recommendations of the Bureau of the Cartagena Convention over the last biennium and assist in providing background information for documentation required by the Member States;

•Support the Principal Coordination Officer on engagements with partners and Contracting Parties, including outstanding mission reports;

•Support the Secretariat’s contribution, closely supervised, to the UN Decade of Ocean Science activities within the Western Atlantic Region;

•Carry out research and assist with the drafting of Environmental Monitoring and Sustainable Development documents, guides and presentations.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree.

Be computer literate in standard office software applications (MS Office Suite).

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of Spanish is highly desirable. Knowledge of other UN Official languages is desirable (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat).

NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
