Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org). UN-Habitat has been working for nearly 40 years in human settlements around the world, focused on building a better future for rural communities, towns, and cities of all sizes. It has its global headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and its regional office for Latin America and the Caribbean in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It also has a country workshop in Mexico City. As part of the work of UN-Habitat, highlight the elaboration of the Report on the state of the cities of the world, the organization of each year of the World Urban Forum, an event in which institutions, organizations, and experts on territorial and urban issues participate, and generation of multiple specific programs, such as: Participatory Program for the Improvement of Communities Precarious (PPMBP), National Urban Policy, Planned city extensions, Urban Prosperity Initiative, Low Emission Urban Development Strategies (Urban-LEDS), Academy of Cities and Climate Change, Urban Energy Program, Laboratory of Urban Planning and Design, Global Urban Observatory and Best Practices Database. The intern will be under the direct supervision of the UN-Habitat, Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mexico and Cuba Office internship is for six (6) months.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the supervision of the Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, the intern will: Integration - Carry out research activities and collect up-to-date and reliable information that allows the identification of areas of opportunity for UN-Habitat's engagement in each country. - Participate in inter-agency meetings, workshops, and other participatory activities convened in the different phases of integration of the UNSDCFs. - Generate proposals and redact inputs for the integration of UN-Habitat’s mandate and territorial approach in the UNSDCFs. - Prepare and participate in reviews with the regional director to agree on the scope and commitments undertaken by UN-Habitat within the UNSDCFs before their approval. - Generate proposals for monitoring indicators on urban and territorial issues. - Review drafts and generate suggestions for working documents.

Implementation - Identify opportunities for the integration of UN-Habitat in the Results Groups that monitor and follow up on the UNSDCFs once approved and signed. - Support in the organization of working meetings with the Results Groups. - Contribute to the development of inter-agency work plans for the implementation of the UNSDCFs. - Participate in the implementation of inter-agency activities defined in the joint work plans. - Elaborate technical inputs (documents, presentations, concept notes, schedules, etc.) as required for the implementation of the joint work plans. - Participate and support in the design and facilitation of forums, workshops, expert and working meetings, as well as other types of interactive sessions according to the joint work plans.

Monitoring and reporting - Elaborate and redact technical inputs for reports (internal and external), regarding UN-Habitat’s contribution to the UNSDCFs implementation. - Measure indicators. - Support in updating platforms, databases, and/or folders as required for the monitoring of the implementation of the UNSDCFs. - Generate communication inputs for the presentation of results. - Elaborate on conclusions and identify areas of opportunity for the next planning cycles.

Operational and management tasks: - Maintain a well-organized archive with information on the different steps and processes of developing, implementing, and monitoring the UNSDCFs for each country to guarantee proper knowledge management. - Participate in meetings, elaborate minutes when required, and support the follow-up of the resulting agreements. - Assist in any other duties as assigned by the supervisor within the framework of the inter-agency collaboration and without prejudice to the achievement of the main objectives.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies: International Relations, Urbanism, Public Policy, Political Science, or similar and/or related areas.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Experience in strategic planning, public policy, and results-based management is required.

Experience in organizing workshops, forums, technical events, and expert meetings, among others is desirable.

Knowledge of the New Urban Agenda and UN-Habitat’s mandate and work is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English and Spanish are required. Knowledge of another official UN Language is desirable.
