Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This position is located in the RCO, Economist office, Mbabane, Eswatini.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator leads the UN County Team (UNCT), including all UN entities present in the Kingdom of Eswatini, and represents the UN Secretary General to the Government of the country. The main goal of the Resident Coordinator is to bring together the different UN agencies for improved efficiency and effectiveness of the operational activities at the country level, helping the UN to be a more relevant partner to the Government.

The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) supports the roles and functions of the UN Resident Coordinator and the United Nations Country Team and provides inter-agency coordination support to Agencies, Funds and Programmes (AFPs) as well as UNs various inter-agency mechanisms. Key functions of the RCO include: (1) strategic analysis, planning and positioning of the Country Team. (2) preparation and monitoring of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2021 -2025. (3) support to joint UN programming and operations management. (4) policy guidance and, (5) ensure system-wide accountability on the ground for the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2021 – 2025. After 18 months of the implementation of the UNSDCF, the UNRCO in Mbabane is offering one internship opportunity starting November 2023.

The RCO, Assistant Economic Analyst Internship is for 4.5 months with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the service.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Development Coordination Officer/Economist in the UN RCO, and the guidance of the Team Leader and Strategic Planner, the intern will: - Support evidence-based analysis to establish the trends of sustainable development, challenges, and opportunities in Eswatini. - Participate in UN internal and external engagements aimed at providing advice on innovative economic and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) policies to accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda. - Support in planning and managing SDG related events. - Engage in sustainable development advocacy and communication activities. - Support knowledge management on SDG related issues and promote learning within the relevant networks. - Maintain existing and build new partnerships with Government, development partners and other stakeholders that collaborate with the UN in the implementation and achievement of the 2030 Agenda. - Keep abreast of Eswatini’s socio-economic trends and identify their implications for UN’s development cooperation. - Any other duties as may be assigned.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies Economics, Economic Policy and Planning, Economic Policy Management, Public Policy or any other related field of study.

Demonstrable skills in writing and presentation are required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Siswati will be an added advantage. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
