Duties and Responsibilities

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a global intergovernmental treaty aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of migratory species and their habitats. Numerous additional intergovernmental instruments on migratory species conservation have been adopted under the broad umbrella of CMS which are supported by the CMS Secretariat. In addition, two regional agreements on migratory species adopted under CMS have independent Secretariats which are co-located with the CMS Secretariat in Bonn - the African Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) and the Agreement on the Conservation of European Populations of Bats (EUROBATS).

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. In the present context, UNEP provides the administrative functions for the CMS, AEWA and EUROBATS Secretariats.

This internship is located within the Administrative and Fund Management Unit (AFMU) of the CMS Secretariat based in Bonn, Germany, supporting administrative services to the entire CMS and Agreements. The internship is unpaid and full-time.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Under the direct supervision of the Administrative Officer, the intern will: • Assist in the compilation and review of data and other information needed for the review and analysis of relevant financial reports; • Assist in reconciling status of the contributions with UNEP HQs • Draft routine correspondence with the Parties concerning arrears and follow-up with the parties on the collection of arrears • Assist in preparing for meetings and trainings including contributing for Power Point presentation and background documents and other relevant materials • Support for the year-end closure exercise, particularly review of the obligations, and communications with the Programme Officers • Preparation of minutes and talking points during the AFMU meetings • Perform any other related duties, as may be assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Educational background or exposure to public administration, finance, management or related issues is desirable. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.

Languages

English, French and Spanish are the working languages of the UNEP/ CMS Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
