Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships: The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is one of the five regional commissions under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. It comprises 56 member States and covers Europe and parts of Central Asia and North America. As a multilateral platform, UNECE facilitates greater economic integration and cooperation among its member countries and promotes sustainable development and economic prosperity through policy dialogue, negotiation of international legal instruments, development of regulations and norms, exchange and application of best practices as well as economic and technical expertise, and technical cooperation for countries with economies in transition. This position is located in the UNECE Office of the Executive Secretary (OES), Fund Support Team of the UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia Multi-Partner Trust Fund (SPECA MPTF). The Programme aims to strengthen sub-regional cooperation in Central Asia (Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) and its integration into the world economy. It is jointly supported by UNECE the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), focusing on water, energy, and environment; sustainable transport, transit, and connectivity; trade; statistics; innovation and technology for sustainable development; and gender and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SPECA MPTF was established by UNECE and UNESCAP in 2024 to provide a flexible, inclusive funding mechanism for practical joint programmatic development and implementation, and is administered by the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office (MPTFO). The SPECA MPTF’s Steering Committee, in line with the SPECA MPTF Terms of Reference, approved the creation of a Fund Support Team to be located at UNECE. Under the supervision of the Deputy Executive Secretary, in coordination with other staff of OES, the Fund Support Team and the UNECE secretariat, the Intern will contribute to the activities in the following areas: Duties and responsibilities: • Supports the preparations for the UNECE Commission session and Regional Forum on Sustainable Development side events, including meeting documents and logistics support. • Supports preparations for the SPECA 2025 Forum (e.g., background documents), including on Energy, Housing, Innovation • Support the operationalization of SPECA MPTF, including the organization of meetings of the Steering Committee. • Supports follow-up activities to SPECA Climate and Innovation Dialogue launched at COP29, including background documents on policy issues of direct relevance to the SPECA MPTF priorities. • Supports follow-up activities to SPECA Network of Climate Smart Cities launched at COP29, including background documents on policy issues of direct relevance to the SPECA MPTF priorities. • Performs other duties in support of SPECA MPTF strategic priorities as required.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Languages
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Russian is an advantage.
